Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

It reads like Independence Day the movie
Revisado: 11-29-24
It’s better than anything coming out of Hollywood right now, but overall a pretty boring, thin reading with nothing on classic sci-fi. I felt like I was reading Independence Day the movie from so many years ago, in terms of depth at least. The voice actor is very good so big props there. It has some clever twists but again, about the depth of a summer blockbuster.

Historia
“It happened fast. Thirty-two minutes for one world to die, another to be born". An epic and gripping tale of catastrophe and survival, The Passage is the story of Amy - abandoned by her mother at the age of six, pursued, and then imprisoned by the shadowy figures behind a government experiment of apocalyptic proportions. But Special Agent Brad Wolgast, the lawman sent to track her down, is disarmed by the curiously quiet girl and risks everything to save her. As the experiment goes nightmarishly wrong, Wolgast secures her escape - but he can’t stop society’s collapse.

Couldn't get into it (spoilers)
Revisado: 09-19-16
Book started out strong but as others mentioned the time skip hurt it for me. I never cared about the new characters and found relationships I was supposed to care about to be hollow (Peter and Alisha for example).
There were some stretches that were interesting and kept my attention but by the end I realized that I am getting off this train. I don't mind long books, I've read and listened to much longer, but this book did nothing to justify its length.
Btw. If you want us to think that the near death of a main character at the end is supposed to be suspenseful then please don't reference earlier at all the great things that character will do later through it's life. Funny I actually wanted the character to die. Thought it might mix things up enough to find an interesting story to tell.

Historia
Fourteen-year-old Greg Dixon is living a nightmare. Attending boarding school outside of Boston, he is separated from his family when a pandemic strikes. His classmates and teachers are dead, rotting in a dormitory-turned-morgue steps from his room. The nights are getting colder, and his food has run out. The last message from his father is to get away from the city and to meet at his grandparents' town in remote New Hampshire.

It's interesting at first.
Revisado: 09-01-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Maybe if they were into this genre. But likely not.
Has The Last Tribe turned you off from other books in this genre?
No but I only listened to this one because I was hoping it was a twist to a tired genre. It was a twist but not necessarily a good one. Loved it at first. It felt authentic and the characters didn't somehow become these badass gun toting freaks.
Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?
Can't say. In the end they all just blended together and were less and less interesting as time passed. I loved that the characters felt more real and didn't just turn into super heroes as said. However the characters were fairly one dimensional. The genius girl especially was an odd choice. In the end it added nothing more than a chance for the author to gush about her (and Paul). I hate conflict for conflict sake but it was just one lucky break after another with the characters weeping for joy at their good fortune. She would have been more interesting and real if she was awkward or something, as someone in her position likely would be.
Do you think The Last Tribe needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. No. No. With the death rates there are so few people left that I don't know where they would go. These characters have all worn out there welcome.
Any additional comments?
I admire what the author tried here but it didn't work in the end.

Why we think it’s a great listen: A performance so poignant, we gave Bronson Pinchot (yes, Balki from Perfect Strangers) our inaugural Narrator of the Year award.... In the monsoon season of 1968-69 at a fire support base called Matterhorn, located in the remote mountains of Vietnam, a young and ambitious Marine lieutenant wants to command a company to further his civilian political ambitions. But two people stand in his way.

Best Audio Book I've listened to yet
Revisado: 08-29-11
Not only is this book incredible, but the narrating is the best I've heard (I've looked for other books done by this guy but didn't find any). His ability to voice different characters is top notch.
The only issue I had is at some parts the writing was so good that I wanted to be reading it to fully appreciate the authors use of language, especially the end.

Historia
Even after the ruinous financial crisis of 2008, America is still beset by the depredations of an oligarchy that is now bigger, more profitable, and more resistant to regulation than ever. Anchored by six megabanks, which together control assets amounting to more than 60 percent of the country's gross domestic product, these financial institutions (now more emphatically "too big to fail") continue to hold the global economy hostage.

Narrator is good, book is better
Revisado: 01-14-11
I at first didn't like him but quickly changed my mind Now I'm almost done and the book is simply excellent and no one should avoid this material because of concerns of narration.
