Historia
From celebrated New York Times best-selling author and winner of the Pulitzer Prize Rick Bragg comes a poignant and wryly funny collection of essays on life in the South. Keenly observed and written with his insightful and deadpan sense of humor, Bragg explores enduring Southern truths about home, place, spirit, table, and the regions' varied geographies, including his native Alabama, Cajun country, and the Gulf Coast.

One Southerners Stories
Revisado: 01-26-22
This book is a compendium of stories by the author. They give his perspective on growing up and living in the South, with a narrative delivered in a refreshingly self-deprecating and humorous southern dialect. It was enjoyable and somewhat enlightening. I highly recommend it for Southerners and anyone with a curious mind who wants to learn more about the Southern U.S.

An amazing football player"s tale
Revisado: 01-20-22
Danny Wuerffel almost seems too good to be true. Of course he had a very strong upbringing and a lot of resources to get where he did. college and professional Athletics can be grueling unforgiving and ultimately corrupting. However by the grace of the Almighty, Danny seems to have escaped with his morals and his character pretty much unscathed. in this book Danny makes it abundantly clear that he owes his successes to the people around him and to his faith in God. The word that comes to mind for Danny is humility, which is a trait that seems to be all too rare in professional athletes. I enjoy listening to this book which was not very lengthy, particularly very frank description of his personal relationship with and debt of gratitude to Jesus Christ.

Historia
In 2001, a community of people in the Appalachian foothills had come to the edge of all they had ever been. Across the South, padlocks and chains bound the doors of silent mills, and it seemed a miracle to blue-collar people in Jacksonville, Alabama, that their mill still bit, shook, and roared. The mill had become almost a living thing, and they served it even as it filled their lungs with lint and shortened their lives. In return, it let them live in stiff-necked dignity in the hills of their fathers.

A true American Gothic
Revisado: 01-10-22
This book tells of a time and place that has never been widely known and thus can't be characterized as forgotten. The lives of men and women, who were virtual slaves to the Alabama cotton mills, lived in austere, monotonous physical circumstances, though rich with human relationships. One can asset that in today's world we live in relative luxury, yet are starving for genuine human interactions.

Gary came from being a kid on a path to a meaningless life to becoming the modern day equivalent of Bob Hope for our servicemen and women, and first responders. This book is a biography with a purpose: to draw attention to the enormous price our fighting men and women have paid to insure our freedom. A must listen book.

Historia
1950: Margaret Devonshire (Megs) is a 17-year-old student of mathematics and physics at Oxford University. When her beloved eight-year-old brother asks Megs if Narnia is real, logical Megs tells him it’s just a book for children, and certainly not true. Homebound due to his illness, and remaining fixated on his favorite books, George presses her to ask the author of the recently released novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe a question: “Where did Narnia come from?”

This novel examines the origins of C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia in a wistful and well-spun first person-voiced narrative. A wistful meditation on the intersection of life and mythology.

Historia
September 1962: On a moonless night over the raging Atlantic Ocean, a thousand miles from land, the engines of Flying Tiger flight 923 to Germany burst into flames, one by one. Pilot John Murray didn't have long before the plane crashed headlong into the 20-foot waves at 120 mph. As the four flight attendants donned life vests, collected sharp objects, and explained how to brace for the ferocious impact, 68 passengers clung to their seats. They all expected to die.

A harrowing and heartening real life story
Revisado: 11-30-21
The ditching of Flying Tigers Airlines flight 923 with 72 souls on board on September 23rd, 1962 is an amazing and almost unbelievable story. This story combines drama, heroism, existential struggles, and human tragedy in a stranger-than-fiction saga. While the matter-of-fact narration is a trifle bland, the details of this incident and it's aftermath are riveting. A very engrossing but mostly forgotten slice of American history.

Historia
Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

I enjoyed this book because it has the ring of veracity about it. The view into the interpersonal realationshops, conflicts, joys and struggles of the individuals in a rick band was very interesting and exceptionally well dramatized.

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

David Goggins tells the story of his journey from a 300lb loser to an extraordinary athlete, Navy Seal, and motivational speaker and author. David reveals the secret of his remarkable self-transformation, and challenges the listener to re-examine their own life in light of their unrealized capabilities. This is a disturbing listening experience, to say the least.
