Historia
St. Louis in 1880 is full of ghosts - mangled soldiers, tortured slaves, the innocent victims of war - and Jacob Tracy can see them all. Ever since Antietam, when he lay delirious among the dead and dying, Trace has been haunted by the country's restless spirits. The curse cost him his family, his calling to the church, and damn near his sanity. He stays out of ghost-populated cities as much as possible these days, guiding wagon trains west with his pragmatic and skeptical partner, Boz.

Any additional comments?
A lack of modulation and subtlety in the characters' moods and dialogues caused me to tire of this potentially interesting ghost story after a few chapters. Instead, I experienced the tone as petulantly aggressive and rough-hewn to the point that the purported highly refined philosophical education of the main character, perhaps meant to lend him weight and depth, came across as, at best, a vain affectation and, more probably, an unbelievable fiction. If you have a taste for melodrama this book may appeal to you.

Historia
When the Iraq war began, conservationist Lawrence Anthony could think of only one thing: the fate of the Baghdad Zoo, caught in the crossfire at the heart of the city. Once Anthony entered Iraq, he discovered that hostilities and uncontrolled looting had devastated the zoo and its animals. Working with members of the zoo staff and a few compassionate U.S. soldiers, Anthony defended the zoo, bartered for food on war-torn streets, and scoured bombed palaces for desperately needed supplies.

This story gave me graphic and dramatic insight into some of the horrendous effects of war without sacrificing my belief in the goodness that is also part of human beings.

Historia
A novel about family, open-minded spirituality, and the American road, Lunch with Buddha accompanies the characters from Breakfast with Buddha as they move further along the path toward lasting peace of mind. Facing one of life's greatest emotional challenges, Otto Ringling takes comfort in a loving family and offbeat lessons from eccentric spiritual teacher Volya Rinpoche.

Any additional comments?
Oh, dear --- this was a disappointment. Of course, death is a subject that is of great importance in a relationship with a spiritual teacher, but in this sequel to Breakfast With Buddha, Otto's first person narrative mires the plot in too much morose introspection to make good reading. I am apprehensive about the projected Dinner with Buddha, as the fresh unselfconsciousness of Breakfast With Buddha may turn out to be unrepeatable.

Volvo" Rinpoche Lights Up the Journey
Revisado: 04-08-15
Any additional comments?
I thought this story might not work -- that it would not persuasively crack the shell of the wise- guy westerner's sophisticated superiority well- represented by Otto. But for me, Merullo's depiction of the Rinpoche, so deft and light-handed, was delightful, surprising and illuminating. And the first person narrative by Otto, though it became a bit didactic in the final scenes, showed enough skill, wit and creativity to strain the credibility of the role he was cast in as mere editor of other people's books, and not a writer himself. I enjoyed and learned from spending time on the road with Otto and Rinpoche and highly recommend this Audible version.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

The New Colossus
Revisado: 01-05-15
Any additional comments?
Surely among the most interesting characters of this unusual and engaging tale is the City of New York, itself, which the author depicts with warmth and detailed familiarity.
The immigrant themes and the imposing strength and stature of the Golem bring to mind the harbor Torchbearer and the poem inscribed at the statue's base, entitled, "The New Colossus," ---- written by a woman named Lazarus. Hmmmm----

I haven't finished listening to this yet, but am enjoying it so much I wanted to pause and enter a review. The story is unusually rich in humor, setting and cast of characters, and the reading by Wanda McCaddon (new to me) is utterly brilliant! For me, her voice is a veritable paintbrush, defining and distinguishing the diverse assortment of personalities with great imagination and persuasive power. A great holiday read!

I looked forward to this book, but ended up finding it tedious. The author gave much more time and attention to the psychological interiors of several of the characters than I found interesting.

Any additional comments?
When I listened to the sample recording segment posted with this title, I was a bit doubtful about the reading as performed by the author. However, having listened to the first hour, I have become very appreciative.I find Helen Palmer's voice and elocution pleasant enough, but, more importantly, the slow pace of her presentation allows me time to savor and absorb the content. Also, some listeners might benefit, as I do, from the, in this instance, natural and central use of pronouns and examples reflecting female experience.

A beautiful reading of this wise and poetic collection of teachings. My only criticism is the jarring intrusion of lengthy promotional material following close upon the final syllable. I encourage purchasers and listeners to discourage the insertion of this kind of material wherever and whenever it appears uninvited. It is not what we pay for, and it is destructive to the efforts of the authors and readers of good literature to create a rewarding experience for the purchaser.
