Historia
"I drink, I hurt myself and the people around me, and then I write." Brett is in Central America, away from her husband, when she begins a love affair with his friend, Eduard. Tragedy and comedy are properly joined at the hip in this loosely autobiographical book about infidelity, drinking, and the postponing of repercussions under the sun. Though coming undone is something we all try to avoid, Martin reminds us that going off the rails is sometimes a part of the ride.

Painful
Revisado: 11-01-24
Disjointed writing and story (no consistency of personality or character in any of the characters) Edward’s voice sounded like Count Dracula and Brett’s turned into a valley girl. Sis and I finished it in a road trip but she was begging to throw in the towel by halfway through

Historia
Romance can be a little complicated when you get sucked into a wormhole. Just ask high school English teacher June Flint. One little solar flare happens and suddenly you find yourself 85 years in the future. Eighty-five years from your dream job. Your ailing mother whose only companion in this world is you. Your favorite stuffed-crust pizza from DeLucia’s on Sunday nights. But when June’s cell phone inexplicably picks up a signal, she’s able to call back to the present—more specifically, four weeks before she accidentally time traveled.

Painfully cringey
Revisado: 09-25-24
I rarely leave a review because I love almost all the things I listen to...but this is one I couldn't finish. I like the two different lead voices (vs one person reading as all characters), however the fake laughing, the accent on the neighbor, etc make this nearly impossible to listen to. The story is subpar. Do not spend full price on this one!

Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Honestly kind of painful
Revisado: 08-03-24
I went in hoping for an amazing story and something that resembled the play -boy, was I wrong! This is a very long, very disjointed, meandering, sometimes weirdly disturbing book. All the subplots get lost. I had to literally force myself to finish it.

Historia
Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe.

Historia
Welcome to Maple Street, a picture-perfect slice of suburban Long Island, its residents bound by their children, their work, and their illusion of safety in a rapidly changing world. But menace skulks among this exclusive enclave. When the Wilde family arrive, they trigger their neighbors’ worst fears. Dad Arlo’s a gruff has-been rock star with track marks. Mom Gertie’s got a thick Brooklyn accent, with high heels and tube tops to match. Their weird kids cuss like sailors. They don’t fit with the way Maple Street sees itself.

Historia
This is a reissue of National Book Award finalist Mary Gaitskill's debut collection, Bad Behavior - powerful stories about dislocation, longing, and desire that depict a disenchanted and rebellious urban-fringe generation as it searches for human connection. Now a classic, Bad Behavior made critical waves when it was first published, heralding Gaitskill's arrival on the literary scene and her establishment as a sharp, erotically charged, and audaciously funny writer of contemporary literature.

Narrator is very flat
Revisado: 04-27-22
The stories are odd (expected) but the narration is really tough to listen to. One tone, VERY flat and monotonous, weird ‘out of breath’ spots and strange lilts/pauses. There is also really no break between the stories so with no change at all in narrator, it feels like one story just streams into the next

Not good
Revisado: 01-09-22
I am a fan of fantasy but this is not good. The story and writing are ridiculous. The performance doing different female/male voices is really hard to listen to. I gave it about 2 hours before I gave up.

Historia
For Michael Stirling, London's most infamous rake, after a lifetime of chasing women, of smiling slyly as they chased him, of allowing himself to be caught but never permitting his heart to become engaged, he took one look at Francesca Bridgerton and fell so fast and hard into love it was a wonder he managed to remain standing. Unfortunately for Michael, however, Francesca's surname was to remain Bridgerton for only a mere 36 hours longer.

Ok but very repetitive

It felt like lines were repeated over and over...same inner dialogue, etc. My least favorite story so far, but the racy scenes were more graphic than the other books

How do we talk about bias? How do we address racial disparities and inequities? What role do our institutions play in creating, maintaining, and magnifying those inequities? What role do we play? With a perspective that is at once scientific, investigative, and informed by personal experience, Dr. Jennifer Eberhardt offers us the language and courage we need to face one of the biggest and most troubling issues of our time. She exposes racial bias at all levels of society - in our neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and criminal justice system.

A lot of facts, bumpy narration
Revisado: 08-07-20
Many, many facts and studies are cited...but not much re: how to use this information for change. Good to keep these ideas in the forefront as we navigate the world.
Narrator was really difficult to listen to - strange pausing, strange emphasis.
