Historia
Sex. The word makes some people giggle or blush, while others may draw back in discomfort. So, why do we find it so difficult to talk openly about sex? Much of our reticence in discussing and acknowledging the realities of sex comes, at least in part, from a unique time and place: medieval Europe. In the 12 episodes of Sex in the Middle Ages, Professor Jennifer McNabb and a panel of experts in medieval history and literature will take you back to the period between the fall of Rome and the rise of the Renaissance to explore the ideals and realities of sex and sexuality.

Boys Will Be Boys
Revisado: 01-12-24
The authors did plenty of research. Very interesting to learn that people viewed sex during the middle ages much as we do now. I found it particularly odd to have several different narrators taking turns willie nillie. The, "Valley Girl", narrator was extremely annoying even though her content was solid.

Common sense tells us that to lose weight, we must eat less and exercise more. But somehow we get stalled. We start on a weight-loss program with good intentions but cannot stay on track. Neither the countless fad diets, nor the annual spending of $50 billion on weight loss helps us feel better or lose weight. Too many of us are in a cycle of shame and guilt. We spend countless hours worrying about what we ate or if we exercised enough, blaming ourselves for actions that we can't undo.

Historia
Great powers no longer fight great wars. But how exactly did countries like the United States go from confronting powerful adversaries in 1914 and 1939 Europe to waging lengthy counterinsurgency campaigns in places like Iraq and Afghanistan? The answer lies in the profound geopolitical and technological changes that came in between.

Wonderfull explanation of how war has evolved
Revisado: 02-17-23
I have always believed that the potential use of nuclear weapons has actually become a deterant to war between nations. The author explains in great detail how this has come to pass.

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

My favorite audiobook ever
Revisado: 02-16-23
John Mcwhorter is phenomenal. His knowledge in regards to linguistics is extreme. He often spoke the languages that was the subject of a particular lecture with considerable skill. The author interjected humor often with sidebars that were delightfully entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Hire a Narrator
Revisado: 02-02-23
A very good book on the history of Charlemagne. I understand that The Great Courses are all narrated by the professors. This professor, however, should have hired a professional narrator to read his book. I could "see" him sitting down with reading glasses slowly turning the pages. It really took away from my enjoyment of the book.

Now, in a series of 36 vivid lectures by an honored teacher and classical scholar, you have the opportunity to understand this remarkable race as never before, studying the Vikings not only as warriors, but in all of the other roles in which they were equally extraordinary - merchants, artists, kings, raiders, seafarers, shipbuilders, and creators of a remarkable literature of myths and sagas.

Laughable. The author repeated themselves dozens of times. Listening to the narrator was worse than fingernails on a chalk board. I could not continue and stopped after only two hours. For me, that is rare.

Historia
In March 2020, at the request of the Los Angeles Times, Charles Finch became a reluctant diarist: As California sheltered in place, he began to write daily notes about the odd ambient changes in his own life and in the lives around him. The result is What Just Happened. In a warm, candid, welcoming voice, and in the tradition of Woolf and Orwell, Finch brings us into his own world: taking long evening walks near his home in LA, listening to music, and keeping virtual connections with friends across the country as they each experience the crisis.

Awful
Revisado: 11-30-21
The author used this book as a way to express his personal opinions by way of cherry-picked events and leftist media accounts. The only two things I agreed with were his love of Beatles and his hatred for Trump.

Historia
We are living through the most prosperous age in all of human history, yet we are listless, divided, and miserable. Wealth and comfort are unparalleled, but our political landscape is unmoored, and rates of suicide, loneliness, and chronic illness continue to skyrocket. How do we explain the gap between these truths? And how should we respond? For evolutionary biologists Heather Heying and Bret Weinstein, the cause of our troubles is clear: The accelerating rate of change in the modern world has outstripped the capacity of our brains and bodies to adapt.

Worry about cholesterol. Avoid red meat. Eat whole grains. Could it all be a lie? We live in an era of health hype and nutrition propaganda, and we are suffering for it. Decades of avoiding egg yolks, choosing margarine over butter, and replacing the real foods of our ancestors with low-fat, processed, packaged substitutes have left us with an obesity epidemic, ever-rising rates of chronic disease, and, above all, total confusion about what to eat and why.

Solid advise based on excellent research with the exception of dairy products. For some reason, the author insists on accepting dairy into the paleo diet even though nothing could be more unnatural.
