YA meets Grimdark

This story was written with a "Yes, but / No, and" structure. basically a descent into darkness.
The pacing is good but the characters were pulled around aimlessly by sticking to that plot structure.

Any book that makes me laugh out loud gets a special 5 star. humor is a bit juvenile at times, so you gotta have a certain sense of humor, but if you're good with a little slap stick and body humor, this is amazing!

I like to write and read fiction, and I bought this book in hopes of learning more about "literary" fiction and how it is crafted.

Professor Hynes has a love of the art and a good amount of writing under his belt. He is passionate about the subject and it comes through in his lecture. He covers a lot of the basics including plotting, characters, and writing beginning and ends. I picked up some great tips.

But what surprised me about this is that it increased my joy as a reader. I've never been a huge fan of literary fiction but after listening to this, I've found myself reading more and enjoying it far more than I had in the past.

Where does The Hike rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's in the middle of the books I've listened too. It's not my type of story but I enjoyed it.

What did you like best about this story?

The ending makes this book worth the read.

What about Christopher Lane’s performance did you like?

He's got great voices and really embodies Ben, the main character, well.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The ending gave me goosebumps.

Any additional comments?

I almost gave up on this book half way through. It's not fantastical to be fantastical and I was having trouble tracking where it was going or why the story was choosing the path it was. I'm glad I pushed through because I really enjoyed the ending.
