Historia
Today the Glock pistol has been embraced by two-thirds of all U.S. police departments, glamorized in countless Hollywood movies, and featured as a ubiquitous presence on prime-time TV. It has been rhapsodized by hip-hop artists, and coveted by cops and crooks alike. Created in 1982 by Gaston Glock, an obscure Austrian curtain-rod manufacturer, and swiftly adopted by the Austrian army, the Glock pistol, with its lightweight plastic frame and large-capacity spring-action magazine, arrived in America at a fortuitous time.

Decidedly anti freedom
Revisado: 03-14-24
This book, contains some interesting history on Glock, his company, and pistol. However the discussions of gun laws, gun law history, and gun culture are decidedly anti gun. The author makes some effort to camouflage his anti gun, or at best Fudd. beliefs, but it clearly shows through.
Some examples; referring the sub compact models as pocket rockets. That term was only used by anti gun media and orgs. Referring to the NRA as extremist and hard line. The NRA has supported every federal gun law ever passed, and has never been the stout defenders of gun rights that the left paints them as. in fact this is a standard leftist trope.
He continually refers to magazines as clips.
He clearly does not understand how small incremental steps, such as 'voluntarily' including trigger locks with every gun to stave off legislation mandating it, clears the way and sets the tone for more onerous restrictions later.
His retelling of the 1986 Miami Dade shoot out is largely accurate.
The statement that only 10 states had concealed carry laws prior to the 1990s leave out that many states had no prohibition on open carry and some had no regulation of concealed carry. He also leaves out the fact that southern states had their constitutions rewritten after the Civil War to restrict private forearm carry or to allow it to be legally restricted.
All.in all its a pretty mixed bag of a book and if you don't already have extensive knowledge of the topics I would take everything said with a handful of salt.

Historia
Is bourbon the quintessential American liquor? Bourbon is not just alcohol - the amber-colored drink is deeply ingrained in American culture and tangled in American history. From the early days of raw corn liquor to the myriad distilleries that have proliferated around the country today, bourbon is a symbol of the United States. This course traces bourbon's entire history, from the 1700s, with Irish, Scottish, and French settlers setting up stills and making distilled spirits in the New World, through today's booming resurgence.

Too much leftist political correctness
Revisado: 10-31-22
Good and interesting information. the author regularly interjects unnecessary leftist ideology and propaganda. If you are deep into the subject it may be worth putting up with. For the casual reader who is not far left it quickly becomes intolerable.

Marxism is a term that many people freely use, but few seem to grasp its implications. Sowell's book is the antidote to this problem. He writes in a fluid and easy-to-follow manner, leading the listener through the Marxian scheme of ideas. Along the way, he shatters some existing interpretations of Marx-interpretations that have developed through repetition rather than through scholarship.

The best examination of Marxisms since Mises
Revisado: 05-17-22
An in depth analysis of Marx and Engels original philosophy, it's evolution, and alteration by subsequent disciples and opponents alike. Dr. Sowell goes into depths and aspects never before explored or even merely brought to light.

Worst audio book ever.
Revisado: 05-15-22
The constant woke interjections were annoying and incorrect. Pirates were not socialist, women were not domestically oppressed, and Europe had limited knowledge and awareness of China because of primitive transport and communications, not Eurocentrism.
The voices and accents are the most awful I have ever heard. I had to turn down the volume for each accent as they were physically painful. then I had to turn it back up to hear the narrator.
The characterizations were ridiculous, stereotypical, and full woke leftist tropes.
The major historical facts were not too far off and a few peices of information new to me were presented. But given the amount of woke leftist propaganda this work contained I doubt if I can trust any new info without independent verification.
There are much better books on pirate history in both print and audio formats.

Historia
The Fishing Life is an entertaining anthology of fishing anecdotes and well-researched articles from across Paul Schullery’s research and fishing career. The author offers up stories, essays, farces, daydreams, and ruminations that will engage listeners of all kinds. Of course, being a fisherman and living the fishing life goes beyond just those days spent with rod and reel in hand. It is something that occupies your mind and your heart, not just your hands.

Nueces is pronounced "New asis" not "noosis"
Revisado: 09-08-21
I just started this one. It seems pretty good so far but discussing the Nueces river the narrator keeps saying "noosis". I keep correcting him but he is not listening to me ;)
Finished now. Aside from mildly subscribing to some common fallacies (population bomb - myth, anthropomorphic climate change - myth) and waxing nostalgic about hurting fish, it was a good book. Not Zane Grey good. But certainly not far below either.

Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original. In this controversial and exciting listen, Pollan explores caffeine’s power as the most-used drug in the world - and the only one we give to children (in soda pop) as a treat.

Good info, bad economics
Revisado: 08-20-21
The information on caffeine and coffee was great. The history was excellent. The comments on the market and climate change indicate a severe lack if knowledge of both on the part of the author. I wish he would have stuck to his subject. I also thought tea got short changed by the heavy focus on coffee.
