Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Interesting

I'm glad to see a popular book retell this story for the benefit of those who continue to blame the Civil War on the North. It appears I'm in the minority regarding narration. The delivery isn't full-throated--not quite whispered but somewhat of a "conspiratorial" tone. I found it odd.

More Histrionics than History

Superb in every possible way.

As entertaining as it is enlightening. My favorite of all The Great Courses. It has really made me THINK. My synapses are on fire.
P.S. If the delivery seems too theatrical for some, please know that Guelzo is FAMOUS for his fabulous oratory, Don't allow what some perceive as "pomp" to outweigh his circumstance. The man is brilliant. Just sit back and ENJOY him. (BTW, the "wry remarks" another reviewer found irritating actually made me laugh out loud.)

Historia
Poisoner, despot, necromancer - the dark legend of Catherine de Medici is centuries old. In this critically hailed biography, Leonie Frieda reclaims the story of this unjustly maligned queen to reveal a skilled ruler battling extraordinary political and personal odds - from a troubled childhood in Florence to her marriage to Henry, son of King Francis I of France; from her transformation of French culture to her fight to protect her throne and her sons' birthright. Based on thousands of private letters, it is a remarkable account of one of the most influential women to wear a crown.

A rare biography of depth and warmth. This book brings so many interesting people to brilliant life. The narrator occasionally mispronounces some French, but charmingly. Otherwise the delivery is flawless. Animated without attitude. LOVE THIS BOOK.

Norman Davies captures it all - the rise and fall of Rome, the sweeping invasions of Alaric and Atilla, the Norman Conquests, the Papal struggles for power, the Renaissance and the Reformation, the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, Europe's rise to become the powerhouse of the world, and its eclipse in our own century, following two devastating World Wars.

No Structure

This is a vast work with few and vague chapter titles. It jumps all over the map and through time. The information can be interesting, but no context is given for anything. Not suitable for audio. The narrator is wonderful.
