4.5 ⭐️ rounded up.
I may have a child just so when they get to the appropriate age, I can read this with them. I cannot wait to read the second story and do not know who wouldn’t love and appreciate the inclusivity and friendship throughout this story.

This was A L O T deeper than I expected but in the best way possible. The portrayal of the small towns power structure and secrets was done so relatable while also infused with SUCH personal trauma for the FMC Avery. Her grandmother is a hoot, and to have watched their relationship form while also grappling with the investable. Then you layer in her and Simone’s relationship, and the absolute ROCK that Avery was for Simone. Ugh. I could not recommend this enough.

As Valerie explores her feelings for Riley, she begins to see that the world she knows is a carefully crafted narrative. Publicly, the girls are close friends—holding hands in prayer, rooming together at a conference. Privately, they grasp at any chance to continue their forbidden romance—until they are found out. Now, Valerie must choose between staying with a family she fears will never accept her, or running away with the girl she loves.

Easily one of my top listened to books EVER.
Revisado: 06-25-24
This book easily SHOT its way to the top of my Best Reads Ever list. How could it not? I kept thinking to myself the whole time how much I wished I had had this book 15 years ago. As thankful has I have always been for the support of my open-minded parents, I have never heard personal stories of those who experienced what Valerie did with the religious influence and blatant homophobia. It was hard for read at points because of how hurt the FMC becomes by those she has loved without a doubt her who life. I want a physical copy for my book shelf and to read over and over again.

A “Because Of Winn Dixie” Remix in the best ways!!
Revisado: 06-17-24
I grew up with ‘Because of Winn Dixie’ being my soul book. The one that nothing else can ever top for you…. It this book came so so so close that the only thing keeping it behind BOWD is my nostalgia for the time as a child when I first read BOWD.
With that being said, this book was everything. I was laughing, especially as a Carolina transplant myself, at the stereotypes you come to learn to be true in the most wholesome ways. The found family, her aunt and uncle stepping up to try to be what Charlie needs. The damn stray dog — heart wrenching in the best way. Go read it. My words will never do it justice.

The end had me like 😶😶😶
Revisado: 06-13-24
Middle school lighthearted writing style with a plot that is less detail oriented than Harry Potters world in a good way. The characters are very strong minded while the teachers are on the more quirky side. Semi-dark (😏) relationship revealed at the end buuuut nothing crazy. Love love loved.

What The Fetlock?!?
Revisado: 05-23-24
This was finished purely out of spite. First let me say, I spent 15-20 years in the eventing scene (Area 1). I tend to stay away from equestrian themed books because they are either western themed, or written by someone who’s only been on a leadline for a few introductory lessons. I reluctantly started this after seeing that it seemed to be a finished series and not young adult. So let’s get into what angered me enough to tell my husband about it:
- the FMC Jules.. is not how I would think any respectful equestrian would want to be portrayed. She is whiny, entitled, unrealistic, immature, blatantly rude and racist. She makes what I would consider derogatory statements regarding her stall hand and his race. She deserves nothing.
- the 100 pages regarding the storm/hurricane. Give me a break. You want us to believe you are going to be the next BIG NAME in eventing, while also admitting you had little to zero plan for your barn/animals/yourself while living in OCALA FLORIDA, should a hurricane be headed your way. However the description of the storm was probably the most realistic part of the whole book.
- more internal dialog than actual conversations which was only an issue due to what I said regarding FMC Jules.
- Asking the vet to LIE about a horses health so the FMC Jules can give the owner an “excuse” for why the horse isn’t further along. This is horrific to ANY horse owner who boards and trains their horse.
I will not be exploring the series or author further.
