Historia
When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.

Very good book. Amazing to see all the ways that fungi live, grow, change, communicate support and so many more. A good mix of personal stories and facts. I knew fungi were important but great to better understand it. Author is a good narrator.

A work of gripping nonfiction, North by Shakespeare presents the twinning narratives of rogue scholar Dennis McCarthy, called "the Steve Jobs of the Shakespeare community", and Sir Thomas North, an Elizabethan courtier whom McCarthy believes to be the undiscovered source for Shakespeare's plays.

I have a hard time understanding shakespere. The old english is tough for me to process and I’ve only studied a couple plays in school. So not a huge fan. So interesting to hear a story about Shakespeare’s story. It seems to be a compelling argument of North’s strong influence (at a minimum) on Shakespeare’s (?) plays. A good story but for someone who doesn’t know the plays there was too much minutia for my likings. I suspect fans of the plays or Tudor England would get more from it. I enjoyed learning about Elizabethan England and that period of history with the intrigue. Good not great for my taste. A nice perspective and view on the plays and the times. I’m more interested to read the plays now.

How much do you know about the radiation all around you? Your electronic devices swarm with it; the sun bathes you in it. It's zooming at you from cell towers, microwave ovens, CT scans, mammogram machines, nuclear power plants, deep space, even the walls of your basement. You cannot see, hear, smell, or feel it, but there is never a single second when it is not flying through your body. Too much of it will kill you, but without it you wouldn't live a year.

Good views on the world of recovery. Good writer - not great. Disappointed that there’s no magic recovery bullet except for sleep, rest and time.

Historia
When we talk about human history, we often focus on great leaders, population forces, and decisive wars. But how has the earth itself determined our destiny? Our planet wobbles, driving changes in climate that forced the transition from nomadism to farming. Mountainous terrain led to the development of democracy in Greece. Atmospheric circulation patterns later on shaped the progression of global exploration, colonization, and trade. Even today, voting behavior in the southeast United States ultimately follows the underlying pattern of 75 million-year-old sediments from an ancient sea.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Historia
Alexander was born into the royal family of Macedonia, the kingdom that would soon rule over Greece. Tutored as a boy by Aristotle, Alexander had an inquisitive mind that would serve him well when he faced formidable obstacles during his military campaigns. Shortly after taking command of the army, he launched an invasion of the Persian Empire, and continued his conquests as far south as the deserts of Egypt and as far east as the mountains of present-day Pakistan and the plains of India.

Historia
Earth evolves. From first atom to molecule, mineral to magma, granite crust to single cell to verdant living landscape, ours is a planet constantly in flux. In this radical new approach to Earth’s biography, senior Carnegie Institution researcher and national best-selling author Robert M. Hazen reveals how the co-evolution of the geosphere and biosphere - of rocks and living matter - has shaped our planet into the only one of its kind in the Solar System, if not the entire cosmos.

Fascinating and overwhelming
Revisado: 06-17-18
A rapid summary of 4.5 billion years of earth. Far too much information to remember many details. The overwhelming details provide a strong image and sense of the vast changes that have continually changed the planet. The science and analysis used by researchers to create a plausible and reasonable understanding of what happened and why are awesome. You finish the book with a strong sense of what a brief moment in time we occupy - but still learn how our short lives are currently affecting the planet. Our impact on the earth will have reverberating impact on the structure and fabric of earth for millions of earths - or even until the sun eventually swallows us up.
While this book was about this third rock from the sun, it made me think about humanity and our place in the universe. very cool book.
