Historia
In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

If you want to understand America
Revisado: 01-06-21
This is an extraordinary book about systematic governmental, institutional, and legal actions and policies that created residential segregation, dramatically increased the racial wealth gap, and violated the constitutional and human rights of African-Americans over the last hundred years. The book is substantial, readable, and admirably straightforward and direct in its evidence and arguments. I found it and eye-opener, one of the most substantive and accessible books I have read about racism in America. Highly recommended.

Historia
Leading experts from business and academia consider coffee's history, global spread, cultivation, preparation, marketing, and the environmental and social issues surrounding it today. They discuss, for example, the impact of globalization; the many definitions of organic, direct trade, and fair trade; the health of female farmers; the relationships among shade, birds, and coffee; roasting as an art and a science; and where profits are made in the commodity chain.

One of the best books about coffee
Revisado: 12-07-20
This book is unusual among books dealing with coffee, because it is a volume with separate articles by diverse authors. It covers a wider range of topics than most books on coffee, and in more detail. I read it over a long period, cover to cover, and got a lot out of it. If you are seriously interested in knowing more about coffee around the world and in the United States, including specialty coffee and the entire process from farm to table, you may find this book worthwhile. As an audiobook, it works well, among other reasons because it is not one of those coffee books where beautiful color pictures are the main attraction. Well read nonfiction for the coffee enthusiast and would-be expert.

Historia
Democracies can die with a coup d'état - or they can die slowly. This happens most deceptively when in piecemeal fashion, with the election of an authoritarian leader, the abuse of governmental power and the complete repression of opposition. All three steps are being taken around the world - not least with the election of Donald Trump - and we must all understand how we can stop them.

Explains our current crisis
Revisado: 06-12-20
This is without a doubt one of the most important books I have read in the last couple of years. If you want to understand how American democracy could come apart at the seams, and this disintegration is already happening, you should read this book. And if you want to understand our current situation in terms of its historical development, and comparisons with other countries—and if you prefer a presentation which is thoughtful and substantive rather than polemical—this is the book for you.

An extraordinary audio book
Revisado: 02-06-19
This is a beautiful and moving short novel by James Baldwin. And the reader, or better to say performer or narrator, who has recorded it is absolutely stellar. Her interpretation of the main character is extraordinary, as is her characterization of the others who speak in the novel. Strongly recommended.

Historia
In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected president. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

Extraordinary rendition by Ron Silver. Highly recommended. Is it counter factual historical fiction? Fictional autobiography? Chilling.
