Historia
At age 14, Wendy Gossard was drawn by the tranquil blue eyes and personal magnetism of a man known as Yahowah, leader of a spiritual group called the Source Family. Fleeing her own family and becoming a fugitive from justice in the state of California, Wendy followed the 1970s cult group across settlements in California and Hawaii on a quest for spiritual direction, communal harmony, and basic survival. Growing up, the teenager, called Mushroom by Yahowah, had questions about her pregnancy, relationships, and place in the universe.

Wild Story of Life in a 1970s Hippy Cult
Revisado: 02-09-25
What a wild life Wendy Baker had as a 15 year old runaway who joined a hippy cult in Los Angeles in the early 1970s!
Wonderful storytelling. Sometimes harrowing -- living in a cardboard box on the street in San Francisco with a baby. Sometimes enchanting -- living in Hawaii, swimming in the sea, meditating at dawn. Sometimes utterly shocking -- the death of the cult leader in a hang glider jumping off a cliff in Oahu. Oftentimes heartbreaking -- Wendy's tale of her brief trip through the juvenile justice system after she ran away from home.
For those interested in cults, this is a case study on what attracts young people to cults, why they stay, and why they ultimately leave. It is fascinating to listen to the author's dawning realization of how the cult leader Father Yod sexually exploited his many "wives" and cult member girlfriends.
This is the kind of book you simply cannot put down. Beautifully written and read with great honesty by the woman who lived it.
Highly recommended.

Historia
Mike Rinder’s parents began taking him to their local Scientology center when he was five years old. After high school, he signed a billion-year contract and was admitted into Scientology’s elite inner circle, the Sea Organization. Brought to founder L. Ron Hubbard’s yacht and promised training in Hubbard’s most advanced techniques, Rinder was instead put to work swabbing the decks. Still, Rinder bought into the doctrine that his personal comfort was secondary to the higher purpose of Hubbard’s world-saving mission.

A Harrowing Tale of Surviving a Dangerous Cult
Revisado: 12-13-22
This book is a fascinating tale of deception, horror, and redemption.
Mike Rinder’s voice telling his own story makes it absolutely riveting. Many of us are familiar by now with the abuses of Scientology, but hearing Mike Rinder’s story in his own words brings the story of L Ron Hubbard’s weird cult to life in fresh and strange ways.
Mike is an excellent writer - the story never lags and is full of new “bombshells” (or at least grenades). He is also an excellent narrator.
Most important, Mr Rinder is a decent human being who has learned much through his life in and out of the cult. He takes responsibility for his past actions and makes amends in ways that are rare in modern culture. The story is spiritually uplifting. Bravo Mike!

Historia
From the hero whistleblower of the infamous Theranos scam, Thicker than Water is a look at never-before-revealed details behind closed doors at the company, revealing a cautionary tale of corporate bullying, gaslighting, ego, and wealth running amok in Silicon Valley. Tyler Shultz had been in the workforce for less than a year when he emailed Elizabeth Holmes, his employer and the CEO and founder of Theranos, with concerns that the company’s lab practices were faulty, ignored quality control, and were potentially dangerous to patients.

Wild, Wild Country in Silicon Valley
Revisado: 11-15-21
It is incredible to hear Tyler Schulz tell this story in his own words and his own voice.
The cult of Theranos is as fascinating as the cult of the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. Listen to this now as the trial is underway. I hope Tyler testifies for the prosecution.
In the face of the malignant narcissism and cold sadism with which Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani operated a reign of terror at Theranos, it is refreshing and heart warming to see that family, friends, music and a moral compass kept Tyler whole during his North Korea style ordeal.
I hope karma comes for Elizabeth, Sunny, David Bois, and the lawyers who persecuted the whistleblowers and employees who tried to speak the truth.
Rest In peace Ian Gibbons. Wishing Tyler, Erika Cheung, John Carreyrou and the lab director all the best.
