Historia
Eleven-year-old Reuben spends his days exploring, hiding, and practicing parkour among the abandoned buildings of the Lower Downs as a way to escape the rough times that have befallen him and his mom - but his discovery of an extraordinary antique pocket watch changes everything. When Reuben finds that the watch has the power to turn him invisible, he's propelled on the adventure of a lifetime. Now Reuben is being pursued by a group of dangerous men called the Directions, and someone - or something - ominously called The Smoke.

loved the story
Revisado: 11-24-18
It took me a while to get used to the narrator's voice, but such it is with audio books! Trenton Lee Stewart is a favorite author of mine (Mysterious Benedict Society), and this story did not disappoint.
I appreciate his use of adults as being important to children and adults as allies. Yes, some adults were "bad" and untrustworthy, but it is clear. I like Jack. He represents so many of us.... do you do something "wrong" for a greater good? Sometimes, yes. Anyway, it was a great story and I really liked how Mr. Stewart wrapped it up. He didn't leave us wondering how on earth life would go on after the primary conflict was solved. Reuben is a sweet, mostly believable, kid. I can think of at least one "tween" who could do what he did!! Well done, Trenton Lee Stewart and Cameron Brown!

beautiful story of love and loss and moving on
Revisado: 07-15-18
I knew going into this book that it was sad. I remember my siblings reading it as adolescents, and thinking, "why would I ever want to read that book?" Now, some 40 years later, I listened to the audio version and fully understand the beauty of Rawls' work and I think, "everyone should read this book!" The reader is amazing, and the story universal. the description of the Ozarks makes me want to visit.

Great Intro to MLKJr and his times
Revisado: 10-01-17
The power of peaceful protest, where love, courage, kindness and commitment, changed the world! The church-based focus of the movement and references to Scripture - to God's way rather than anger and bitterness - is inspiring..... and perhaps lost to this current generation. A great read.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

In Remembering the Music, Forgetting the Words, Kate Whouley strips away the romantic veneer of mother-daughter love to bare the toothed and tough reality of caring for a parent who is slowly losing her mind. Yet, this is not a dark or dour look at the demon of Alzheimer’s. Whouley shares the trying, the tender, and the sometimes hilarious moments in meeting the challenge also known as Mom.

Excellent Narrator, Insightful author
Revisado: 09-13-16
Catherine Gaffney is an excellent narrator. Kate Whouley is a brilliant writer. as someone who is living with a person with dementia, I found Kate's book to be insightful, encouraging, and compassionate. I'd often find myself recounting certain sections of the book to my husband, saying, "Kate's mom reminds me of dad." or, "Did you know people with dementia [fill in the blank]. That is just like dad."

Historia
In the South of the 1890s, Booker T. Washington stood as the often controversial personification of the aspirations of the Black masses. The Civil War had ended, casting uneducated Blacks adrift or, equally tenuous, creating a class of sharecroppers still dependent on the whims of their former owners. Black Reconstruction, for all its outward trimming, had failed to deliver its promised economic and political empowerment.

enlightening book
Revisado: 06-12-16
I found the book the to be an enlightening read about the life and times of a man and Institute I knew little about, except for second hand . the reader foes a good job. Booker T. Washington was a wise man who believed that kindness, unselfish living, and hard work would make a person successful - whether "colored" or not. an excellent primary source for learning about this time in history.
