Radical vulnerability and honest exposure of humanity; a truly singular tale recounting the hellish life of a touring musician struggling with near lifelong gender dysphoria. Probably one of the most raw self discovery memoirs in print.

My wife said it sounded like the indigenous version of Resident Evil and The Walking Dead. I feel that is a reductionist viewpoint that favors colonizer storytellers as more authentic in the genre of horror, which is unfair. Indigenous storytelling, including horror stories, is centuries older than any colonizer genre. Roanhorse incorporates indigenous culture and ways of seeing into an accessible and entertaining epic that shows the promise of this young and capable storyteller. Echoes of Jeff Barnaby and Sterlin Harjo are evident, as I recall characters from Makko, Rhymes for Young Ghouls, and Blood Quantum. But Joy Harjo’s influence can be felt in descriptions of the desert southwest and the longing and grief resulting from the loss of family and tradition. A wonderful entry into the very long record of indigenous horror storytelling.

I’ve been meaning to read Sasha’s writing for years, and now I wish I’d done so sooner. This book, while a deeply personal story of transformation, loss, grief, and healing; is also a universal story of searching and finding self through connection to land and family history.

I really enjoyed the characterizations and the performance, and certain scenes/sequences were written with a healthy dose of drama. The storyline/plot, however, was slow and really hard to stay engaged with. Many of the key characters lacked depth and believability, and it was really hard to decide which characters were worthy of emotional investment. For a first in a long timeline story, it didn’t seem to do much to establish any themes, tropes, or ongoing storylines, and the characters are all, ultimately, pretty forgettable.

Critical music history from one of the most respected elders. These songs should be on everyone’s frequent rotation, and their history should be common knowledge. Chuck D’s voice is unforgettable, and his narration natural and captivating.
