Historia
Watergate could have turned out quite differently. In this novel, it does. The story is told by a fictitious White House official who becomes entangled in a web of bribery, blackmail, arson, and espionage. He conspicuously fails to follow his own good advice: Don’t do anything you wouldn’t want to see on the front page of the Washington Post.

Compelling, Especially for the Watergate Junkie
Revisado: 11-01-21
The 38th President is a fascinating listen for any Watergate junkie, and succeeds where many alternate histories do not: It’s grounded in fact and takes plausible alternate turns in the plot.
The excellent narration by Philip Benoit keeps the story moving forward. It sets exactly the right tone, weaving the threads together with a steady pulse. I’m familiar with much of Benoit’s previous work and note that this is his particular strength – weaving a fabric of believability that envelopes the reader in the world of the story.
I can’t say more without giving away important plot points of the book, but let it suffice to say that the narration of the “everyman” (a presidential aide) drawn into an extraordinary situation remains believable and compelling throughout.

Historia
Chaplain James D. Johnson chose to accompany his men, unarmed, on their daily combat operations, a decision made against the recommendations of his superiors. During what would be the final days for some, he offered his ministry not from a pulpit but on the battlefields - in hot landing zones and rice paddies, in hospitals, aboard ship, and knee-deep in mud. Through his compelling narration, he takes us into the hearts of frightened young boys and the minds of experienced men.

A compelling story, captivating narration
Revisado: 03-24-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. The horrors of war are familiar, and many books on the subject don't rise above the level of a catalog of tragedies, but Combat Chaplain brings home the physical and psychological toll of Vietnam.
What did you like best about this story?
It focuses or moral dilemmas but doesn't lecture or preach...it shows how a dilemma is just that -- a choice between alternatives, often alternatives that aren't very good in either case.
Which character – as performed by Philip Benoit – was your favorite?
The story is told throughout in the voice of the author, Captain James D. Johnson. The narration is superb. With one voice throughout, there is always the danger of the rendition becoming monotonous. But Benoit's narration is engaging and subtle...he reveals layers and complexity of the main character's personality in a very realistic and engaging way.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, although I do most of my listening in the car and didn't have the opportunity to play the work through in one sitting.
Any additional comments?
I checked the narrator's web site and read something about his experiences in Vietnam. I would imagine that Benoit's background lends to the authenticity that is readily apparent in this rendition of the book.

Suspenseful Western with a Masterful Narration
Revisado: 12-21-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
An excellent story that never bogs down. Great characters and characterization.
What other book might you compare Spirit Trail to and why?
The style is reminiscent of Louis L'Amour -- a very literary type of Western prose.
What does Philip Benoit bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Benoit shows remarkable skill in his voice characterizations. Some narrators simply try too hard and sound like bad impersonators. This work, though, makes the characters shine through and the narrator focuses on the story rather than trying to draw attention to himself.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A Western without the cliches.
