Speculative military fiction is not done any better than this great partnership of writers and the perfect narration by R.C. Bray. Its all there; great characters, great character development, a hall of a great yarn and a perfect storyteller. I really can't think of another novel that comes close. And I read a lot of this stuff.

Seems as though the series is running out of juice

I have read/listen to the entire series several times, as well as the companion series. This is the only book that I have been disappointed in. It seems that Mr. Stirling is running out of creative energy here; or is trying to move the story from the the narrative to the mythic, (an obvious theme for the series) much too fast. I really did not like it and probably will abandon the series at this point.

I have been an Audible subscriber for about ten years now and download at least two books a month. This is a good book. It reminds me of The Stand. It is dystopian and post apocalyptic. It is long. It uses a multiple point of view structure and some of the characters actually die, even those that you may like. If you like this type of novel or The Road, this book is for you. If you would rather read pre-digested pap for morons, pass it by.

A Taint In The Blood is Steven Stirling’s new novel loosely based on Dracula by Bram Stoker and The Story of O, by Anne Desclos. The estates of Stoker and Desclos should sue.
Stirling is generally a good, well researched author who has worked in a variety of speculative fiction genres. I have read most of his novels and have enjoyed them immensely. This most recent work is the exception. Apparently he has decided to jump on the vampire bandwagon with a vengeance, and has created a work of supreme awfulness. Todd McLaren has narrated all of Mr. Stirling's work that I have listened to, and again usually does a very good job. In this reading he sounds embarrassed from time to time. No wonder. Save your money or credits and pass this one by.
