I had no idea of this story and Harris does an excellent job of bringing the events to life.

Why do people like this book so much? The character feels completely inauthentic and undergoes a resolution that is absurdly smooth and tidy. I’ve read romance novels with more complexity and realism.

I enjoyed the narrator’s delivery of Scottish accents.

Entertaining tale, well performed

The book is composed of letters and diaries and each is read by a well-cast narrator. The story is eventful, with some dark moments, but the tone remains cheerful as the power of friendship and community is enough to keep everyone going. The book could be seen as uplifting and fun or as shallow, depending on how realistic you prefer your fiction.

A fun conclusion

If you're a fan of the series you will of course have to hear the final chapter. I knocked off one star because the resolution is really not plausible, however much Finnemore tried to pave the way by throwing around the phrase "fairytale ending." But there are certainly some priceless scenes, such as a conversation in which Douglas imitate someone, Arthur deploys one of his ever-so-convincing accents and Martin arrives and finds himself to imitate someone as well.

Light and funny

I wanted a light and funny book, no portentous literary fiction, and this book met my expectations. It is largely a madcap farce in which many ridiculous but entertaining things happen.

A couple who meet in high school in Nigeria take very different paths through the next 20 or so years. All the steps of their journeys in the U.S., the U.K. and their home country are presented in a very compelling and entertaining way. The narrator is wonderful. Overall, it's fabulous.

So glad I discovered this scifi classic

My main comment about this book is the narrator: he was completely perfect. He brought the main character fully to life, which really added a great dimension to the story for me. There is a lot of military jargon and battle scenes which might have been a struggle to read through, but delivered in the first person narration it all worked. He was also able to present other characters in an engaging way. I especially liked the strange diction of one person William meets while recovering from injury and the laconic style of Charlie in the last section.

The story was episodic and thus the narrative momentum was uneven. But there was a lot to like and a ton of intriguing ideas about how warfare and society might develop over the centuries.

Whoa! Captivating and amazing!

Though Cumming is a celebrity the book has little to do with that and much to do with his difficult and mysterious family history. The story is told with vivid detail and unfolded with perfect pacing. Questions emerge, and as soon as one is resolved it leads to new ones. You are absolutely pulled along. Cumming as the narrator is, unsurprisingly, excellent.

Excellent book, narrator is a problem

Other reviewers complained about the narrator, but I thought, it'll be fine. But upon finishing the book, I didn't love it and when I contemplated why, the answer was the narrator. The book itself is very fascinating and skillfully told. It contains a lot of very current scientific research. I have a few questions that I'd like to pose, things that were kind of left without being explored fully. Still, overall a very worthwhile and engaging book. But listening to it is kind of a drag.
