Sobering Story of Election Fraud & Justice
Revisado: 08-07-24
This is a very sobering story of political corruption, strong-arm tactics, election fraud & frontier-style justice when all other recourse fails. It is a cautionary tale for our perilous times.

WWIII wasn’t what any of the analysts expected. Across the globe, battles raged. Taiwan fell. Fighting continued in the Caribbean and South America. The Russian Far East had invaders, and nobody seemed able to stop this new Red Army. With the world in chaos, it was hard to unravel the pieces.

Excellent War Yarn!
Revisado: 05-03-24
Loved this well-researched, hyper-realistic near-future hard science fiction look at the impending war between Communist China & the West. My only complaint (as a veteran) is the numerous mistakes in pronunciation by the narrator (“Hue City” is actually pronounced “WHEY City” not “HUE City” (the ship in question is named after the ancient capital of Vietnam, Thua Thien-Hue, which played a significant role in combat operations during the 1968 Tet Offensive**)), and 5.56mm ammunition is commonly called “five-five-six” or (usually) “five-point-five-six,” never “five-fifty-six.” Otherwise, it’s an excellent book!
**That’s why the phrase in the book, “Where there’s a will there’s a HUE” makes no sense at all, as mispronounced.

Historia
Madrid, 1957. Under the fascist dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, Spain is hiding a dark secret. Meanwhile, tourists and foreign businessmen flood into Spain under the welcoming promise of sunshine and wine. Among them is 18-year-old Daniel Matheson, the son of an oil tycoon, who arrives in Madrid with his parents hoping to connect with the country of his mother's birth through the lens of his camera. Photography - and fate - introduce him to Ana, whose family's interweaving obstacles reveal the lingering grasp of the Spanish Civil War.

Historia
Faust is a tragic play in two parts that reworks the late medieval myth of a brilliant but disillusioned scholar who makes a deal with the devil. Faust is considered by many to be Goethe's masterpiece and the greatest work of German literature. Part I sets out Faust’s despair, his pact with Mephistopheles, and his love for Gretchen. Part II deals with Faust’s life at court, the wooing and winning of Helen of Troy, and his purification and redemption.

I liked the lyricism of this translation. It amazes me how a work can be translated and maintain a similitude of the original prosody. Book 1 was much more compelling to me than Book 2.
