Historia
Nothing is more inspiring than a big vision that becomes a triumphant new reality. But more modest endeavours, whether launching a small business, organizing a conference, or just finishing a work project on time, commonly fail. Why? Understanding what distinguishes the triumphs from the failures has been the life’s work of Oxford professor Bent Flyvbjerg. In How Big Things Get Done, he identifies the errors that lead projects to fail, and the research-based principles that will make yours succeed.

One of the best
Revisado: 01-26-25
"How Big Things Get Done" is one of the most outstanding project management books I’ve read. The author is undeniably qualified, having advised the UK government and overseen remarkable achievements, like the successful installation of around 20,000 classrooms in Nepal. The insights are concise, actionable, and incredibly well-written, while the narration is top-notch. Perfect narration and production. This book stands out as a must-read for anyone interested in project management or large-scale achievements. Easily one of the top books in the field.

People talk a lot about the problems with intensive farming. But the problem isn't the adjective. It's the noun. Around the world, farming has been wiping out vast habitats, depleting freshwater, polluting oceans, and accelerating global heating, while leaving millions undernourished and unfed. Increasingly, there are signs that the system itself is beginning to flicker. But, as George Monbiot shows us in this brilliant, bracingly original new book, there is another way.

Important and neglected area
Revisado: 01-25-24
Meticulously researched and very well presented. Hope and frustration in equal doses. One of the most important issues of our time and very much needing our attention and action.

Historia
For short-lived races like humans, space is dominated by the complicated, grandiose Mercatoria. To the Dwellers who may live billions of years, the galaxy consists of their gas-giant planets - the rest is debris. Fassin Taak is a Slow Seer privileged to work with the Dwellers of the gas-giant Nasqueron. His work consists of rummaging for data in their vast, disorganised memories and libraries. Unfortunately, without knowing it, he's come close to an ancient secret of unimaginable importance.

was it me or was this not as good as other culture books
Revisado: 01-17-24
I know it wasn't technically a culture series book, and I must admit to listening before sleeping and not bothering to rewind to before I fell asleep, but overall I have to say I found this pretty dull for some reason.

Historia
Masters of Doom is the amazing true story of the Lennon and McCartney of video games: John Carmack and John Romero. Together, they ruled big business. They transformed popular culture. And they provoked a national controversy. More than anything, they lived a unique and rollicking American Dream, escaping the broken homes of their youth to produce the most notoriously successful game franchises in history - Doom and Quake - until the games they made tore them apart. This is a story of friendship and betrayal, commerce and artistry.

Awesome performance by Will Weaton of an exciting start-up story
Revisado: 01-17-24
I've listened to a lot of audiobooks and this narration is one of the best. Really a well produced performance. Will was perfect for the content. And having lived through the evolution of video games it was great to hear some of the back story, extremely well written.

Historia
In this classic evaluation of play that has become a “must-listen” for those in game design, Dutch philosopher Johan Huizinga defines play as the central activity in flourishing societies. Like civilization, play requires structure and participants willing to create within limits. Starting with Plato, Huizinga traces the contribution of Homo Ludens, or “man the player” through medieval times, the Renaissance, and into our modern civilization.

Shocking production of a difficult book
Revisado: 01-11-24
Terrible narration but got to blame the producers at least partially for rushing the guy through in one cut by the sounds of it. Such an old school philosophical set of ideas that are so often cited in gaming and simulation literature would've been a lot more digestable with a professional production.

The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction - cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade....

I was looking for the best utopian sci fi and this kept popping up. The story starts in the middle of a war so not perfectly utopian, but an excellent future universe. On to the next in the series!

The night manager is Jonathan, a veteran of clandestine operations. In flight from a failed marriage and his own past, he has taken refuge in the luxury hotel trade. Yet he finds no escape from his demons. Driven by a desire for atonement and by an inherited patriotism, Jonathan allows himself to be recruited as a British secret agent with a mission to expose the murderer of the woman he himself betrayed. His odyssey takes him across Britain and Canada to the Caribbean and the jungles of Panama. But there are more treacherous jungles still in Whitehall and Washington.

Extremely high quality writing, perfectly narrated. Le Carré's real world intelligence experience shines through in the realism of a slow and methodical build up to a meticulous operation... With backstabbing and subterfuge as ever present risks.

In relationships, we experience both the best and worst of ourselves. Growing Yourself Up helps you understand yourself by understanding your relationships. Drawing on Bowen family systems theory, the book explores each life stage to see predictable relationship patterns and then make self-adjustments to facilitate change. Struggled to get past the robotic reading. Actually a robot could do better!
But the content was very useful, with some nice insights and really practical learnings for everyday life and relationships.
If I wasn't so hooked on audiobooks I think this would be better read in paper format.

Historia
Nobody needs telling that there isn't enough time. We're obsessed by our lengthening to-do lists, our overfilled inboxes, the struggle against distraction and the sense that our attention spans are shrivelling. Yet we rarely make the conscious connection that these problems only trouble us in the first place, thanks to the ultimate time-management problem: the challenge of how best to use our 4,000 weeks. Four Thousand Weeks is an uplifting, engrossing and deeply realistic exploration of this problem.

Classic book badly read
Revisado: 12-31-22
One of the worst narrations of the many audiobooks I've listened to. Weller had his moments, and I'll blame the producers for I assume not giving him the time and retakes to get it done properly, but overall he sounded unprofessional, as robotic as his Robocop character, and really hard to listen to.
