Historia
America’s chaotic retreat from Afghanistan in 2021 was nothing short of a horror show. Women and children were trampled to death outside the gates of the Kabul airfield. Desperate Afghans fell from the landing gear of departing planes. Taliban fighters mercilessly whipped and humiliated U.S. civilians. Countless Afghan interpreters were abandoned to the mercy of the Taliban after risking their lives alongside American troops for years. And thirteen U.S. service members were murdered in an ISIS suicide bombing. Still, the full story is worse than anyone imagined.

Biased, but somewhat informative.
Revisado: 09-12-23
This is a strongly biased book. The author clearly does not like President Biden. The bias is so overwhelming that the reader is left wondering and reexamining statements made in the book. With that said, this book does shed significant light upon America's final days in Afghanistan. The reader just has to suffer through a lot of the author's opinions.

Historia
In his earlier best sellers Guns, Germs and Steel and Collapse, Jared Diamond transformed our understanding of what makes civilizations rise and fall. Now, in the final audiobook in this monumental trilogy, he reveals how successful nations recover from crisis through selective change - a coping mechanism more commonly associated with personal trauma.

More opinions than anything else, very subjective.
Revisado: 09-04-23
Options, factual inaccuracies and dubious conclusions make this a difficult book to get through. The author portrays personal conclusions as absolute fact to the reader in a manner that comes across like a college lecture.
While it is an interesting premise, Diamond does not end up making a compelling argument.

Historia
It's 1978. Nero Wolfe, New York's 300-pound epicurean genius detective, has been dead for two years, leaving Archie holding the brownstone. In a post-Wolfe dystopia with a sense of humor, Archie, Saul, Fritz, and Cramer find themselves in the crosshairs of a worldwide criminal cartel. In America, it's a time of change: Vietnam, Watergate, free love, smallpox, the reserve clause, and cheap oil are all history. Aided and abetted by Roy Cohn, Richard Wragg, Dorothy Bruce, the Army, FBI, CIA, and the Dutch police, will Saul and Archie live up to Wolfe's legacy?

Dumpster fire of a mystery novel
Revisado: 05-06-23
The story starts out strong with a lot of potential, but ultimately leaves the reader disappointed. There are random characters that contribute little to the story, The ending is abrupt and poorly planned. The mystery could have been stellar, but crashes and burns instead. The narrator was decent, but did not portray Archie's voice well. The year is supposed to be 1978 yet the author makes no attempt to be era appropriate, instead it sounds like it is taking place in 2021. The author is weak when it comes to describing rooms and surroundings and characters are hastily introduced.
Overall it comes across like it was written by a high school student in AP English.

Historia
On January 12, 2010, the deadliest earthquake in the history of the Western Hemisphere struck the nation least prepared to handle one. Jonathan M. Katz, the only full-time American news correspondent in Haiti, was inside his house when it buckled along with hundreds of thousands of others. In this visceral first-hand account, Katz takes readers inside the terror of that day, the devastation visited on ordinary Haitians, and through the monumental--yet misbegotten--rescue effort that followed.

An excellent book about a lesser known event.
Revisado: 02-09-22
This book does a good job of narrating and explaining what happened in Haiti after the earthquake. The story is slightly marred by the author's overly judgemental tone. At times it sounds like like something I'd hear at an Emo show.

Historia
Smedley Butler was the most celebrated warfighter of his time. Best-selling books were written about him. Hollywood adored him. Wherever the flag went, “The Fighting Quaker” went - serving in nearly every major overseas conflict from the Spanish War of 1898 until the eve of World War II.

A great book explaining American imperialism
Revisado: 02-01-22
This book explains the term "American Imperialism". It was a term that I had not understood and this book fills in many of the blank spaces of early 20th century American history.
That being said, the author's personal opinions overshadow much of the historic context that his research has revealed. I was interested in Butler's actions and how they are still being felt today, I don't care about Katz's moral judgement.

Historia
The transition from President Donald J. Trump to President Joseph R. Biden Jr. stands as one of the most dangerous periods in American history. But as number one internationally best-selling author Bob Woodward and acclaimed reporter Robert Costa reveal for the first time, it was far more than just a domestic political crisis. Woodward and Costa interviewed more than 200 people at the center of the turmoil, resulting in more than 6,000 pages of transcripts - and a spellbinding and definitive portrait of a nation on the brink.

Extremely informative, but gushy towards Biden.
Revisado: 09-28-21
This is a hard read/listen at times and very very gushy towards Joe Biden, which diminishes from the facts that are being reported. However, this book will be of indefinite value to future generations in understanding the events that took place on and around January 6th, 2021.
That was a pivotal event in American politics and American life and this book documents some of the inner working explaining WHAT exactly happened, which future generations will undoubtedly find useful.
This book actually improved my opinion of Trump slightly because I had previously seen him as a Sulla type figure instead of...
Either way, it is a good but not perfect book.

Historia
With unprecedented access to more than a dozen individuals who have made the life-and-death decisions that come with running the world’s most powerful and influential intelligence service, Chris Whipple tells the story of an agency that answers to the United States president alone, but whose activities — spying, espionage, and covert action — take place on every continent. At pivotal moments, the CIA acts as a counterforce against rogue presidents, starting in the mid-70s with DCI Richard Helms’s refusal to conceal Richard Nixon’s criminality.

A rose colored history of the CIA
Revisado: 09-15-21
The author is an apologist for the Central Intelligence Agency blaming presidents and the FBI for the Agency's less admirable deeds. Anything that portrays the CIA in a poor light is skimmed over.
While a good book, this is clearly a narrative and should be read as such. The writer clearly believes that the CIA does no wrong.

"the soldiers of the US Maine"
Revisado: 07-24-21
There are notable and annoying typos, such as "the soldiers of the US Maine" instead of "the sailors of the USS Maine" being among the most glaring examples. The poor editing left me wondering if the authors research was just as bad.
