Historia
What begins as a typical day for Officer Bernadette Manuelito - serving a bench warrant, dealing with a herd of cattle obstructing traffic, and stumbling across a crime scene - takes an unexpected twist when she’s called to help find an old friend. Years ago, Bernie and Maya were roommates, but time and Maya’s struggles with addiction drove them apart. Now Maya’s brother asks Bernie to find out what happened to his sister. Tracing Maya’s whereabouts, Bernie learns that her old friend had confessed to the murder of her estranged husband, a prominent astronomer.

Tried to return it but was not allowed. Did not like the narration at all. Very amateurish. Bring back George Guidall!

Engaging read but predictable
Revisado: 04-05-25
The plot becomes obvious fairly quickly, who the “bad guy” really is… rather fantastic but the writing holds the reader in good suspense even though I’d figured it out by the time of the “date”.

Not the caliber of The Thursday Murder Club
Revisado: 09-28-24
Boring, couldn’t get into this. Too many story lines, none that interesting, and characters to keep track of right from the beginning. Nicola Walker’s narration, while I really like her acting, is mostly monotone and doesn’t give any distinction between the characters. I’ve loved the Thursday Murder Club books so this is something of a disappointment. I returned it.

Historia
The man’s body is found in the early morning light by a local dog walker in the park outside Rosebank, a home for troubled teens in the coastal village of Longwater. The victim is Josh, a staff member, who was due to work the previous night but never showed up. DI Vera Stanhope is called out to investigate the death, with her only clue being the disappearance of one of the home’s residents, fourteen-year-old Chloe Spence. Vera can’t bring herself to believe that a teenager is responsible for the murder, but even she can’t dismiss the possibility.

A disappointment
Revisado: 09-03-24
I was so looking forward to a new Vera because I’ve loved the series, but Dark Wives did not live up Ms Cleeves usual standards. The story seemed weaker than what I’ve come to expect from Ms. Cleeves. The story and characters just not as compelling as in previous Vera novels. The whole witch hunt thing seemed a tired contrivance, some version of this kind of thing has been used so often in various mystery series. Narrator’s male Geordie accents seemed overdone, especially Joe’s. I think it must be very difficult for a narrator of one sex to convincingly do the voices of the opposite gender without sounding contrived, it sounded like she was just trying too hard - rather annoying and distracting. I give it a B-.

The gang's search leads them into the antiques business, where the tricks of the trade are as old as the objects themselves. As they encounter drug dealers, art forgers, and online fraudsters—as well as heartache close to home—Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim have no idea whom to trust.

Historia
Around one a.m. on an early spring morning, two teenage gangs are arrested after clashing violently in one of Venice’s squares. Commissario Claudia Griffoni, on duty that night, perhaps ill-advisedly walks the last of the boys home because his father, Dario Monforte, failed to pick him up at the Questura. Coincidentally, Guido Brunetti is asked by a wealthy friend of Vice-Questore Patta to vet Monforte for a job, triggering Brunetti’s memory that twenty years earlier Monforte had been publicly celebrated as the hero of a devastating bombing of the Italian military compound in Iraq.

Revisado: 07-16-24
Not up to her usual standard. Weak and uninteresting plot, missing much of the usual and enjoyable descriptions of Venice as a background character. Guido, always a delight, seemed less engaged and not as strongly drawn in this one. Maybe Ms. Leon is tiring of the series, seemed like not much effort went into this one. David Colacci’s narration always great.

Historia
When Brian Foley is charged with the murder of his next-door neighbour, the fastidious Arthur Cranham, it seems the case against the blustering showman is cut and dried: prints, DNA, CCTV footage - there can't be any doubt. After all - Brian and Arthur have famously been at war for years. But Jack and Sarah are convinced that the police have it wrong. With time running out, can they prove Brian's innocence and find the real killer? Set in the sleepy English village of Cherringham, the detective series brings together an unlikely sleuthing duo: English web designer Sarah and American ex-cop Jack.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Alfred Armiger was like a bull in the ring, belligerent and sure of himself. But Armiger was mortal after all. There was no stronger proof of it than the blood that oozed from his skull, mingling with the red wine he'd spilled on the floor at the moment of impact.

Enjoyed it but...
Revisado: 02-23-21
Was disappointed by the repeat plot device from first book in series: Dominic setting a trap to solve the case by putting himself in danger. Surprising that such a good writer would resort to such a repetition...laziness? I’ve loved all the Cadfael books, and the first in this series was very enjoyable for both plot and character development. This one seemed a bit thin in comparison. Still, I’ll try one more. Just hope Dominic has a more background role. Precocious kids can become tiresome.

Historia
When a British tourist fails to turn up for a luxurious cooking vacation in Bruno's usually idyllic Dordogne village of St. Denis, the worried hostess is quick to call on Bruno for help. Monica Felder is nowhere to be found, and her husband, a retired British major, is unreachable. And not long after Bruno discovers that Monica was traveling with a mysterious Irishman (her lover?), the two turn up dead. The Irishman's background in intelligence and his connection to Monica's husband only raise more questions for Bruno.

Great series!
Revisado: 12-10-20
Love the Bruno series! Great characters, especially Bruno, his love of animals (his Bassets, his horse Hector) fine food and the regional cuisine and wine of the Périgord, as well as the setting of the stories in the beautiful Dordogne region, the combination of history, both ancient and modern, including WW2 and the résistance, modern policing and intelligence, mouth watering cuisine and recipes, and wine! I traveled in this area of France many years ago and this series has made we want to go back and look more deeply.
The narrator is great. However, my only criticism is that while, for the most part, I do love the narration, please, please stop trying to do American accents! They are really quite atrocious and as an American, it’s like listening to fingernails on a chalk board. You don’t give Bruno and the French characters French accents, so why do you feel the need to try to do American accents?
