The heads of the Hydra are many, peering into the void from every vantage Seen and Unseen. True and Untrue.

For that is the way of the Hydra. A multitude of action and motive with singularity of purpose and design, Known and Unknown.

Sown then is the blood of the Hyrda. Clean and Unclean.

Hydra Dominatus. Yet, this is a lie.

This should be required reading for Mil History, Mil Philosophy, Poli Sci, all the service academies and anyone else interested in the evolution of warfare. It isn't "a book about a game," it's a history book about modern conflict.

"New Trek" got you afraid for the futrue of Trek? ... Listen to this. Have some hope. There's still life in those bones, yet.

The amount of ways this book connects to TOS, without smacking you in the forehead with it, is really amazing.

The plot, concepts, feel, tone ... this is Trek. Military overtones, professionalism, and a sense of duty to their ship, crew, and fleet. The cultures outside of the Federation are also on full display, with subtle nuance that isn't trying to reinvent the wheel; it just casts what was already established in the scene and lets the story and characters take over.

Hats off to Dayton Ward.

And, lest we forget, Robert Petkoff did an outstanding job with the narration and was faithful to the characters without being comedic; we knew who was speaking without needing a reminder, but didn't become an impressionist. He made the characters his own and it really added to the book when it could have easily taken away from it.

Author - Has written good 40k books before. Go read one of them. I recommend Huron Blackheart: Master of the Maelstorm, Warboss or ... how about a little title named The Lion: Son of the Forest.

The Story - Painful ... if you're here for 40k, read something listed above. If you're here for Alpha Legion, go listen to Alpharius: Head of the Hydra. Same author. Not that you'd be able to figure that out given how he now presents them.

The Performance - Horrid. Worst 40k performance I've ever heard. He somehow made Space Marines sound like pre-teens anxious over who might kiss at the movies. I'd rather listen to an autotune voice bot with a static "vox" filter on it reading the script.

Overall - Skip this book. This is not a lie. Do not waste your time. It might be "passable" if you read a physical copy ... but don't listen to it.

This is either the book that will be cited by Luetin for the next five years about a hundred different topics ...

Or.

This is the book that Luetin cites as the most hilarious misinfo-lore-ation book in the Warhammer 40k verse for the next five years.

This review was a lie.

The cover swipes art from another Rogue Trader product. The plot swipes concepts from other books. The author doesn't seem to pay attention to the lore.

The narrator does a great job ... when he's speaking only for the protagonist. And after that, everyone sounds the same and conversations become very taxing because the same tone, delivery, etc. is used for every participant. He does make sure to say all of the 40k jargon right, though.

The plot is painful.

Avoid ... not worth it.
