LOVE this narrator
Revisado: 06-20-23
Max is one of my favorite characters in the Lion and Mouse series, and I love how Cary Hite brought him to life. I wish that he could do Max’s narration for every book, but I know that isn’t possible.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Open, Thoughtful, and Sad
Revisado: 01-12-23
Prince Harry is very open about his life here. He made plenty of mistakes and didn’t gloss over them. He also didn’t shy away from his own culpability in many of them.
However, the British Royal Family’s dynamics are something to behold. They are steeped in tradition, even in private. And that creates an unhealthy distance and even rivalries between family members that should be close. Harry’s role in his own family was the afterthought and the scapegoat..and he sees and knows it. And that was terribly damaging to him.
So was the loss of his mother. It’s not explicitly said, but she seems to have been the only one who saw him as more than just the spare to his big brother’s heir. And he’s been trying to find that again ever since.
Contrary to what many think, this book wasn’t all about Meghan. She doesn’t feature until the last third of the book. And one of the reasons she won him so completely was that she was the one who finally saw HIM. Not the prince. Since she had already had life experiences of her own, she wasn’t overly impressed with his being a prince. She made him EARN her, and that was good.
Also, contrary to what’s been said, he doesn’t trash his family that much. Or not more than their actions (or lack of actions) deserve. Some of the things he says about them are nice and meaningful, particularly his father. William is a more complicated relationship. He’s fully aware Harry is supposed to be the spare to his heir and never lets him forget it.
Spare is definitely worth reading, and the audio in his voice enhances the experience. He is a very good reader, not stiff or boring at all.
