Historia
"My father had more than 50 children." So begins the haunting memoir of Anna LeBaron, daughter of the notorious polygamist and murderer Ervil LeBaron. With her father wanted by the FBI for killing anyone who tried to leave his cult - a radical branch of Mormonism - Anna and her siblings were constantly on the run with the other sister-wives. Often starving and always desperate, the children lived in terror. Even though there were dozens of them together, Anna always felt alone.

terribly written interesting story by crazy woman
Revisado: 02-01-24
this book is very poorly written. as in the prose is God awful. story is interesting (altho also, told very badly bc the author has no idea how to tell a story/craft a memoir) because these people are a fascinating/entertaining combination of depraved and deranged. I personally, greatly enjoy all the whacko Mormon and splinter polygamist group stories. the author (and most everyone portrayed in this memoir) are not the brightest people. you might want to just skip the last 2 or 3 chapters because it's just a lot of nutty Jesus hoo haw...I don't think she made as much progress in her years of therapy as she thinks/claims she did. 🙄🙄🙄

Remember when we hit it off so well that we decided we’re going to need more wine? Well, this time you and I are going to turn to our friend the bartender and ask, you got anything stronger? I promise to continue to make you laugh, but with this round, the stakes get higher as the conversation goes deeper.

A Must Read For Every Woman
Revisado: 09-23-21
Gabrielle Union Wade talks about things that NO ONE talks about. But that we all NEED to talk about when it comes to women's bodies and reproduction and pregnancies and babies and miscarriages and fertility. Her honesty and bravery are breathtaking. I cried through the first half of the book.
And if you're not Black and you WANT to be an ally?? The rest of this book is your entry guide...

GREAT Thriller/Detective Story!!
Revisado: 06-29-21
this is the 2d in a projected series of books centered around Irish American NY (Long Island) Detective Maggie D'Arcy. I did listen to the first book, but you don't have to in order to jump right into this one. all the "backstory" is not really required to be totally sucked into the twists and turns of A Distant Grave. it's good! I love a good thriller/espionage type book and this is kind of a mash up with various elements from local cops to international intrigue to war crimes. Sarah Stewart Taylor hits SO MANY interesting plot lines/twists and does it well. I also am a big fan of storylines that leap back and forth in time and provide more than one "point of view." I like books that allow me to really get inside characters heads. A Distant Grave does that really well.
Ireland and Long Island play big roles in the book and it's interesting comparison.
And it is pretty great to read(listen to) a detective/crime/thriller where the protagonist is a woman. But also a GROWN woman who is a single, working mother trying to navigate a career she excels at, being the sole parent to a teenage daughter AND attempting a "romantic relationship."
look ladies, we're ALL super heroes. it's nice to see that actually represented, you know?

Historia
Punch Me Up to the Gods introduces a powerful new talent in Brian Broome, whose early years growing up in Ohio as a dark-skinned Black boy harboring crushes on other boys propel forward this gorgeous, aching, and unforgettable debut. Brian’s recounting of his experiences—in all their cringe-worthy, hilarious, and heartbreaking glory—reveal a perpetual outsider awkwardly squirming to find his way in. Indiscriminate sex and escalating drug use help to soothe his hurt, young psyche, usually to uproarious and devastating effect.

this memoir is a game changer
Revisado: 06-16-21
this is the bravest, most honest and open and BREATHTAKING (it will take your actual breath away) telling of a life. the only time I've felt this about a man's memoir before was "Heavy." BOTH should be required reading for every American. listening to a life read by the author is also the only way to go in memoirs. listen to this. encourage everyone you know to as well.

Historia
Divorced from his own wife and carrying on halfheartedly with another man's, saddled with a bum knee and friends who make enemies redundant, Sully now has one new problem to cope with: a long-estranged son who is in imminent danger of following in his father's footsteps. With its uproarious humor and a heart that embraces humanity's follies as well as its triumphs, Nobody's Fool, from Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Richard Russo, is storytelling at its most generous. Nobody’s Fool was made into a movie starring Paul Newman, Bruce Willis, Jessica Tandy, and Melody Griffith.

this book needs to be edited for racism
Revisado: 04-27-21
I have read every book Richard Russo has written. But apparently I had never read "Nobody's Fool." just saw the movie (starring Paul Newman) over and over again. it is a GREAT movie with a fantastic cast. I love all Russo's small town books because his characters and their lives and their communities are real and hilarious. it's all a lot like my actual life. EXCEPT his repeated, horrendous use of the "N word" in this book. it is insanely offensive and ignorant and racist. they wisely edited it completely out of the movie. it's existence in this book REPEATEDLY assures that I will never recommend Nobody's Fool to anyone. Mr Russo needs to revisit his novel and edit it for future reprintings to remove his ignorance. it destroys the novel.

Historia
Raised in sleepy English suburbia, Georgina Lawton was no stranger to homogeneity. Her parents were White; her friends were White; there was no reason for her to think she was any different. But over time her brown skin and dark, kinky hair frequently made her a target of prejudice. In Georgina’s insistently color-blind household, with no acknowledgement of her difference or access to Black culture, she lacked the coordinates to make sense of who she was.

Revisado: 04-20-21
the problem with this book is it is equal parts memoir and "instruction manual on being Black." so it's sort of not "useful" for anyone who actually knows about hair...you know?? I'm sure there are a lot of "white" people who need to read/listen to this book. I hope the author "circles back" when she is older and writes an actual memoir, minus all the instructional bits because her life and life/personal experiences are AMAZING and FASCINATING and INSPIRATIONAL and HILARIOUS. all the things

the only thing I wish is that the author was also the narrator. Deesha Philyaw's story writing craft is EXCEPTIONAL. These are everything short stories should be. she creates compelling characters so believable I was strongly, emotionally affected by and for them throughout the stories. high recommend!

An excellent student from a poor, traditional family in Seoul, the narrator has absorbed the same message her whole life: Only a boy can provide the family with dignity and wealth. Not her. Not her three sisters. Receiving approval only for uncomplaining sacrifice, she has resolved to take on her family’s troubles. She is a good girl. And she knows what good girls must do.

Revisado: 04-20-21
Min Jin Lee is an excellent storyteller. her stories pull you, drag you along, give you insight to worlds, peoples, lives, experiences you would otherwise not have access to. all good fiction should accomplish that. she also tells you many things without ever having to "spell them out." THAT is the skill of a really good writer.

Reese almost had it all: a loving relationship with Amy, an apartment in New York City, a job she didn't hate. She had scraped together what previous generations of trans women could only dream of: a life of mundane, bourgeois comforts. The only thing missing was a child. But then her girlfriend, Amy, detransitioned and became Ames, and everything fell apart. Now Reese is caught in a self-destructive pattern: avoiding her loneliness by sleeping with married men.

this is not a good book
Revisado: 04-20-21
the quality of writing/prose in this book is mediocre at best. I think, at times, the author wants to be funny/witty, but cannot do it. either does not have the writing or editing skills. the main character is quite unlikable. which is unfortunate. the last chapter or two, however, really are good storytelling and compelling. but I feel like I had to sort of trudge through all the rest of the book to get to that. the worst part, IMO, is the author reduces trans womanhood to a one or two dimensional reality that is equal parts performative and obsession with being sexually desired by cis men. this book is not worthy of all the notice it has been receiving. there are far better written books by and about trans people. prose matters.
