The story of these prisoners’ treatment is hard to read, but so worth putting into a powerful book.

Historia
This touching and uproarious novel by author Paul Murray made everyone’s best fiction of 2010 lists, including The Washington Post, Financial Times, Village Voice, and others. Why Skippy dies and what happens next is the mystery that links the boys of Dublin’s Seabrook College (Ruprecht Van Doren, the overweight genius obsessed with string theory; Carl, the teenager drug dealer and borderline psychotic; Philip Kilfether, the basketball-playing midget) to their parents and teachers in ways that no one could have imagined.

Skippy was such a poignant character and other characters were compelling. And then there were some hilarious moments and some very heartbreaking moments.

This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Emotional blackmail
Revisado: 11-07-18
Wow, I felt as if my heart had been ripped from my chest and stomped on. The graphic detail of the suffering in this book is just too awful and probably could have been toned down. I had trouble believing the complete career success of the main character when his emotional life was so compromised.

Historia
A finalist for the National Book Award, Lost in the City features 15 poignant short stories, each set in Washington, D.C. Far removed from marble monuments and the offices of rich politicians, the nation's capital that Jones captures is inhabited by self-willed African-Americans struggling to live their lives as best they can.

I have listened to this several times as I consider Edward P. Jones one of the most accomplished writers in America. His stories are gritty, limning the lives of marginalized characters in Washington, DC. Some of his stories are unforgettable that stay in my mind long after the reading.

Part of Ivan Doig’s acclaimed Montana trilogy, English Creek revolves around Jick McCaskill, a 14-year-old growing up in 1930s Montana. This incandescent coming-of-age tale dramatizes the climatic events of one summer that inevitably mark Jick’s awakening from childhood to adulthood.

Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Historia
An enormously entertaining classic, The Way West brings to life the adventure of the western passage and the pioneer spirit. The sequel to The Big Sky, this celebrated novel charts a frontiersman's return to the untamed West in 1846. Dick Summers, as pilot of a wagon train, guides a group of settlers on the difficult journey from Missouri to Oregon. In sensitive but unsentimental prose, Guthrie illuminates the harsh trials and resounding triumphs of pioneer life. With The Way West, he pays homage to the grandeur of the western wilderness, its stark and beautiful scenery, and its extraordinary people.

Heading for Oregon from Missouri
Revisado: 11-11-16
Would you consider the audio edition of The Way West to be better than the print version?
This had been on my to-be-read list for a long time. The storyline is somewhat predictable, but enjoyable. The wagon train experience seems to be more or less accurate and the characters were likeable, for the most part. Some of the language would not fly today.
If you could take any character from The Way West out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Rebecca Evans.
Any additional comments?
Now I want to read The Big Sky.

Historia
In White Trash, Nancy Isenberg upends assumptions about America's supposedly class-free society. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early 19th century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ's Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty.

Very important book
Revisado: 08-13-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. It's a book that examines class in America from its founding to today.
What didn’t you like about Kirsten Potter’s performance?
She needed someone to sit down with her to tell her how to pronounce a lot of words. These are the ones that she mispronounced: Penderlea, Lea, Beaufort, Grizzard, Mollie Ivins.
Any additional comments?
I was struck by how much Andrew Jackson's personality seems like Donald Trump's.

Historia
In the India of 1942, two rapes take place simultaneously - that of an English girl in Mayapore, and that of India by the British. In each, physical violence, racial animosity, the coercion of the weak by the strong all play their part, but playing a part too are love, affection, loyalty, and recognition that the last division of all to be overcome is the colour of the skin.

My favorite books
Revisado: 05-24-16
What did you love best about The Jewel in the Crown?
This novel and the ones that follow are about as nearly perfect as books could be for me. The story is compelling, the characters are unforgettable, the history is fascinating. I have read all these books before (The Raj Quartet) and have watched the PBS series probably twenty-five times and I have never tired of them.
What did you like best about this story?
The characters in this novel are simply unforgettable: Daphne Manners, Hari Kumar, Ronald Merrick, and so many more.
Any additional comments?
I listened to an earlier sound recording of this series, and this one is far superior. The reader is awesome at becoming different characters in a completely believable fashion.
