The Mongol army led by Genghis Khan subjugated more lands and people in 25 years than the Romans did in 400. In nearly every country the Mongols conquered, they brought an unprecedented rise in cultural communication, expanded trade, and a blossoming of civilization.

Learned a lot about Genghis Khan
Revisado: 10-18-24
Listened to this while on a road trip and it was very interesting as I didn't know much about his early life. I've read stories that had him as an incidental character, but not the main character. Good narration.

The story is seen through the eyes of Uhtred, a dispossessed nobleman, who is captured as a child by the Danes and then raised by them so that, by the time the Northmen begin their assault on Wessex, Alfred's kingdom and the last territory in English hands, Uhtred almost thinks of himself as a Dane.

Love everything Uhtred
Revisado: 10-18-24
Love ALL of the books. Bernard Cornwell is such a great story teller and the Audible book narrator is awesome. I have read ALL the books and watched the Netflix series (3x) and movie. The series is great, but the books are amazing. This first book in the series is just the beginning and it's wonderful beginning. Many nights I found myself listening until 1-2am just to get to the next chapter to find out what happened...love it.

Love the story of Margaret Beaufort
Revisado: 10-18-24
I watched the STARZ series and loved/hated the character of Margaret Beaufort. Her story is so interesting but sad. I love the idea of watching the series and then reading/listening to the books as I'm able to visualize the characters and landscape. This is a quick listen/read and at the end you are wanting to know more about this period and what happened to her son...next book please.

BROTHER TURNS ON BROTHER to win the ultimate prize, the throne of England, in this dazzling account of the wars of the Plantagenets. They are the claimants and kings who ruled England before the Tudors, and now Philippa Gregory brings them to life through the dramatic and intimate stories of the secret players: the indomitable women, starting with Elizabeth Woodville, the White Queen.

Historia
Jane Grey was queen of England for nine days. Her father and his allies crowned her instead of the dead king's half sister, Mary Tudor, who quickly mustered an army, claimed her throne, and locked Jane in the Tower of London. When Jane refused to betray her Protestant faith, Mary sent her to the executioner's block, where Jane transformed her father's greedy power grab into tragic martyrdom.

What a sad story
Revisado: 10-18-24
The life of Jane Grey is so sad. Philippa's writings are always on point and so enjoyable to read/listen. The Tudor Dynasty is so interesting and full of intrigue. It is one of my favorite historical periods and I read/listen to many books written about this subject. I always love Philippa's character concepts. Great writer.

Love the story of Suleiman the Magnificent
Revisado: 10-18-24
I love hearing the stories about Suleiman the Magnificent. What an amazing but also difficult life. A little light on specifics in some parts, but otherwise, a good companion when traveling...kept my attention. The narrators were easy to listen to and brought life to the stories.

Historia
The Ottoman Empire has long been depicted as the Islamic Asian antithesis of the Christian European West. But the reality was starkly different: the Ottomans’ multiethnic, multilingual, and multireligious domain reached deep into Europe’s heart. Indeed, the Ottoman rulers saw themselves as the new Romans. Recounting the Ottomans’ remarkable rise from a frontier principality to a world empire, historian Marc David Baer traces their debts to their Turkish, Mongolian, Islamic, and Byzantine heritage.

Thoroughly enjoyed the telling of the Ottoman Empire. I love this period of history and as a Westerner learned so much about the politics and society during the 1300-1700's when the empire was flourishing.

Historia
Antonio Mendez and his future wife, Jonna, were CIA operatives working to spy on Moscow in the late 1970s, at one of the most dangerous moments in the Cold War. Soviets kept files on all foreigners, studied their patterns, tapped their phones, and even planted listening devices within the US embassy. In short, intelligence work was effectively impossible. The Soviet threat loomed larger than ever. The Moscow Rules tells the story of the intelligence breakthroughs that turned the odds in America's favor.
