There is wisdom in this short, weird novel. Heavily influenced by The Book of Lamps and Banners, by Elizabeth Hand, read by the marvelous Carol Monda —maybe I would object to her being the same reader of The Book of Lamps and Banners— Sara Gran wove a story that is a lot more than a horror novel.
It is not that scary, is sad, and beautifully written. Interesting and, sometimes sexy, it is a very good book. Loved it.

First: I am a fan of Andrew Mayne. I love his books, but I didn't like this one at all. I found it boring, disjointed and, sorry, bad. The story was all over the place, some teasers here and there to hook the reader in, but the whole thing was so flimsy they burst apart after a few paragraphs.
The bad guy is corny and ridiculous.
I really hope Mayne will get the next one. Theo Cray is a great character.

No esperen Los hermanos Karamazov.

¿no será igualmente dañino?

Such a beautiful, raw, angry book!

Do not expect this to be a quick fix, where magic does not cost a thing. This is a book about women, power, birth and friendship. About the cultural prisons built for women since, well, always.
Grady Hendrix, and this is a heartfelt compliment, has written an open eyed book about the sufferings of teenage pregnant girls in the seventies. About male privilege. About race. No condescension, no sugar coating.
I read a review in Goodreads, and the reader complained that this was not Harry Potter. She was very mean about it. I am a Potterhead myself. and no, this is harder and meant for more astute and mature readers; for people that can handle hard to swallow truth with their magic. There is no Hogwarts here, just the American South.
I always found a slanted feminism in the other books by Grady Hendrix, but always softened a little by jokes. Here, his feminism comes back and bites your ass, it is so sharp. Also, there a beautifully written parts.
It is always exciting to read how a writer comes into his powers. (And I didn't like How to sell a Haunted House at all; I am not an easy customer).

Important ideas mixed with awful violence

I didn't know what to expect, and I'm still reeling. As usual with Grady Hendrix's books, it's extremely convoluted and violent, but always, too, there are many important ideas thrown in: the why? in the violence against women, the cult of serial killers in the USA, the indifference to victims, the pathetic ego trips of violent persons, that are worth my while.
I, usually, end his books with mixed feelings. This is no exception.
Adrienne King does an outstanding job.

I bought this one on a crazy moment, after listening to, and disliking heartedly, How to sell a Haunted House, by the same author.
But this one is so funny, so sharp, clever and terrible, I fell in love with it. It's fun and has a pointed, acidic social commentary you will ponder after laughing out loud.

It is an homage to Salem's Lot, for sure, but also, a sly take on the male (vampiric) patronizing gaze on women. I love Mrs Greene. She is lovely, strong, no nonsense. I loved everything.
It has very violent parts, I have to say, but it is, after all, a vampire story. And you will laugh, and sometimes feel sad.
Bahni Turpin is a genius.

So preposterous I started rolling my eyes, but ended laughing out loud. Ari Fliakos reads beautifully, but no amount of good reading can make this one believable, enjoyable or at least, scary.

I had forgotten how truly scary this book is

I am sixty three years old. I read like a madwoman; reading is part of my job. I thought about reading Salem's Lot after a note on the NYT about a series. IT SCARED MY SHOES OFF. It is truly scary because it grapples with the problem of Evil, with a capital E.
Stephen King's incredible gifts were at his peak when he wrote this. He is a great writer, but maybe too prolific, a modern Alexandre Dumas,

Here is a incredible diorama of his love of children, dogs, underdogs, his excellent portraits of human nature, of doubt, of malice, of fear.

The reader does a great job too.

A wonderful elegy to childhood mixed with terrible images and serious creepiness. I was enjoying it very much until it went awry. I mean, seriously awry, convoluted and silly. The narrator is very good.

A book that could have been great. I do not think I'll trust Dan Simmons with my time anymore. Too bad.
