Historia
Once an aristocrat in the heady days of pre-revolutionary France, now Lestat is a rockstar in the demonic, shimmering 1980s. He rushes through the centuries in search of others like him, seeking answers to the mystery of his terrifying exsitence. His story, the second volume in Anne Rice's best-selling Vampire Chronicles, is mesmerizing, passionate, and thrilling.

I hated this book when I first read it. I'm rereading the series and thought that an audio might be easier to get through.
I was wrong.
Even Simon Vance couldn't save this mess. The vast majority of the book isn't Lestat's story... it's other vampires' lives. Lestat is perfect and beautiful and heroic except when he isn't (btw that is most of the time). While Interview is a beautifully written book about the descent into monstrosity, TVL is more focused on how superpowers are cool and blood is yummy.
This book should have been excellent. There's no reason why it isn't other than Rice wanted to plug her wider world and tell other stories instead of writing a rebuttal to Interview (which would have been interesting). Not worth it. I regret my choices.

Historia
We are in a small room with the vampire, face to face, as he speaks--as he pours out the hypnotic, shocking, moving, and erotically charged confessions of his first two hundred years as one of the living dead. . . He speaks quietly, plainly, even gently . . . carrying us back to the night when he departed human existence as heir--young, romantic, cultivated--to a great Louisiana plantation, and was inducted by the radiant and sinister Lestat into the other, the "endless," life....

Beautiful story, as always
Revisado: 09-17-24
Interview has always been one of my favorite books.
Simon Vance is one of my favorite readers.
Yet, he went with a weird Eastern European accent... in a story told by a French-born Louisianan. It's a weird choice that frequently messed up my ability to get immersed in the story.

Historia
In the town of Night Vale, there’s a faceless old woman who secretly lives in everyone’s home, but no one knows how she got there or where she came from...until now. Told in a series of eerie flashbacks, the story of The Faceless Old Woman goes back centuries to reveal an initially blissful and then tragic childhood on a Mediterranean Estate in the early 19th century, her rise in the criminal underworld of Europe, a nautical adventure with a mysterious organization of smugglers, her plot for revenge on the ones who betrayed her, and ultimately her death and its aftermath.

Mara Wilson is a gem. Just...to be clear.
The Faceless Old Woman has been one of the most interestingly creepy characters in Nightvale for an extremely long time. I always wondered what her deal was.
Now I know...and it is stupid. Aside from rampant historical on inaccuracies (a band of pirates with a bunch of women, one of whom is a lesbian? really? not gonna happen. And she mentioned traveling Pakistan in the far past when Pakistan wasn't a name until the 20th century)... aside from all of that... WHY PIRATES?!
This felt like the writers wanted to write a period piece but not research anything while still bilking the Fandom. This was just awful.

Please, for the sake of an otherwise good performance, learn to say the words that are written. "Kitsune" is "kit-soo-nay" not "kit-soon". Additionally, why did the latino characters sound carribean? I liked the reader... But she was a big weak point for this audio book.

The town of Stillwater has been dying - the long and painful death of a town ravaged by floods and haunted by the ghosts of all who had lived there. Yet this most recent flood has brought something with it - a creature that nests among the good folks of Stillwater...and feeds off them. The children who haven't disappeared whisper the same word - "vampire". But they're wrong. What has come to Stillwater is something much more horrific.

Really not the best
Revisado: 06-24-22
I've listened to multiple Malfi titles and this was really the weakest. I couldn't tell you the names of any characters because they die after a brief mention. It's basically just a really bad version of Salem's Lot.

Historia
Deep in the heart of Appalachia stands a crooked farmhouse miles from any road. The Morrows keep to themselves, and it's served them well so far. When girls go missing off the side of the highway, the cops don't knock on their door. Which is a good thing, seeing what's buried in the Morrows' backyard. But 19-year-old Michael Morrow isn't like the rest of his family. He doesn't take pleasure in the screams that echo through the trees.

Great story but...
Revisado: 11-09-21
The story is interesting... If poorly explained (and all the explanation come from very unreliable witnesses). Characterization for everyone outside of Michael, Reb and Misty all but nonexistent. But somehow that works.
The reader, though...the man reads everything in the "announcer voice" for horror movie trailers. But run that through a William Shatner filter.

Historia
New York City in 1978 is a dirty, dangerous place to live - and die. Joey Peacock knows this as well as anybody - he has spent the last forty years as an adolescent vampire, perfecting the routine he now enjoys: womanizing in punk clubs and discotheques, feeding by night, and sleeping by day with others of his kind in the macabre labyrinth under the city's sidewalks.

The story moves fast and the characters are interesting but it's sometimes difficult to follow and the ending just kind of left me going "Kay."
I don't want to spoil anything but a unreliable narrator should not be that heavy handed about the revelation.

Finding the line in a classic car is her calling. Now Grace has to find the line in her own life. Grace loves John, and John loves her, and that would be wonderful, except that John, like Grace, has unfinished business: He's haunted by the childhood death of his younger brother. He's never stopped feeling responsible.

Still listening but...
Revisado: 04-02-21
Tai Sammons is terrible at sounding Hispanic. Seriously. Either use a Spanish accent on Spanish words (tortilla is tortiya but norteño is not norteno) or don't. But the back and forth switching, especially with such an overdone spanish accent, is very jarring.
There's something really bad about a Canadian writing for a Hispanic character. Maybe screwing up Día de Los Muertos is what finally did it for me. He used either French or just really messed up his vocabulary.
And, yes. I live in a Spanish speaking area. I am speaking from experience.
Wrapped it up and... Eh. It was okay. But definitely not his best work. The romance is scatter shot, the tone comes off as someone who really doesn't understand a culture (hot rods or Hispanic, take your pick) trying to explain it.
It wasn't bad, it just wasn't great. Tsi really needs to learn Spanish if she wants to keep reading roles like this.
