Historia
The "Golden Age" of television was in part so named because it was the era in which new technology was pioneered and industry rules were still being written. Here was a fascinating new medium, founded by executives with no previous body of experience, and a myriad of directions in which to proceed. Numerous factions spent the next generation wresting control over content and the content/product relationship.

Memory Lane revisited
Revisado: 06-30-20
I was a teenager in the early 60's and thrived on Serling's work. I remember the excitement at age 18 of meeting a woman who had been a classmate of his, and her description of the writer's creative genius. This audio book has inspired me, now age 72, to purchase the DVD collection of Twilight Zone stories and relive that creative genius. Thank you, Audible!

Historia
Modernity developed only in the West - in Europe and North America. Nowhere else did science and democracy arise; nowhere else was slavery outlawed. Only Westerners invented chimneys, musical scores, telescopes, eyeglasses, pianos, electric lights, aspirin, and soap. The question is, why? Unfortunately, that question has become so politically incorrect that most scholars avoid it. But acclaimed author Rodney Stark provides the answers in this sweeping new look at Western civilization.

Historia
The secret behind France's astonishingly well-behaved children is here. When American journalist Pamela Druckerman has a baby in Paris, she doesn't aspire to become a "French parent". French parenting isn't a known thing, like French fashion or French cheese. Even French parents themselves insist they aren't doing anything special. But French children are far better behaved and more in command of themselves than American kids....

Omit the accents, please!
Revisado: 04-16-12
How could the performance have been better?
By eliminating the Ms. Craden's use of ridiculous British & French accents throughout the book.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Definitely anger! I was hoping to learn the author's view of cultural differences of raising children (I am an American living in France, like her). Instead, the person reading the text, Ms. Craden, felt compelled to demonstrate her incompetent pronunciation of both British and French accents. This made it impossible to concentrate on WHAT was being said, and forced me to suffer through HOW it was being said! When I reached chapter 3, I called it quits and stopped listening -- and promised myself never to buy another audiobook where the reader wants to show off his/her poor acting talents. Tell the readers, especially Ms. Craden, to just read the texts in a normal, native American accent, and stop showing off.

Historia
Imagine the impact on world history if Robert E. Lee had listened to General Longstreet at Gettysburg and withdrawn to higher ground instead of sending Pickett uphill against the entrenched Union line. Or if Napolon, at Waterloo, had avoided mistakes he'd never made before. The advice that would have changed the outcome of these crucial battles is found in a book on strategy written centuries before Christ was born.

One of the best books I've ever owned!
Revisado: 12-12-11
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Definitely! The book is not only well written, it is well narrated, too!
Who was your favorite character and why?
All of the chapters were interesting, but perhaps Stonewall Jackson was the most exciting of the characters.
Have you listened to any of Edoardo Ballerini’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, I never have -- but his voice and inflection was perfect for the task.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes -- and will do so again!
Any additional comments?
My title says it all: it's one of the best books I've ever owned, and the fact that it is in audible form is perhaps the icing on the cake!

This could have been better...
Revisado: 07-19-09
This story is interesting enough, although it certainly resembles the 1985 television series NORTH & SOUTH in many places -- and the filmed story is much better performed. The narrator of this audiobook apparently felt the need to immitate each character's voice, whether male or female, and all of these voices & accents sound so similar that it's very difficult to determine who is speaking. He should have just read it in his own voice! I'll give two stars to the author, but the narrator gets zero.

Wonderful memories
Revisado: 04-22-09
What a great walk down memory lane... Mr. Molina puts just the right amount of tone and emphasis in his voice as he tells this fascinating story. And a wonderful story it is, made all the better by the fact that I lived this period with their music in my ears. If you want to go back and re-live the 60's, this is a good way to do it.

Many thanks, Phil Town!

Pimsleur does it again!
Revisado: 01-09-09
I always try to learn not just a few set phrases in a foreign language, but the elementary building blocks upon which I can attempt to create my own sentences. I've done this with Pimsleur courses in Greek, Arabic, and English (for French speakers). So, when the time came to learn Italian (I travel a lot), I knew Pimsleur would not let me down! Sure enough, Pimsleur has done it again... what a marvelous method for learning languages.

Very stimulating
Revisado: 08-15-08
I bought volumes 1, 2 and 3 in 2004 and listen to portions of them frequently, usually once a week. Having grown up in a church which deformed religion beyond any recognition, I was hungry to find an author who asked hard questions and demanded straight answers. I got more than I expected with these 3 volumes, and the male-female voices added just the right touch. There are a lot of things to analyze in the topics covered, but there's always a touch of humor present. The volumes changed my steadily hardening negative views towards organized religion and enabled me to see God as a one-to-one relationship to be cherished and nourished regularly. I recommend these 3 volumes to anyone who wants to give up on believing in God -- regardless of whatever your definition of "God" might be.

Perfect companion
Revisado: 08-15-08
I bought this audiobook 4 years ago, and still enjoy listening to it regularly. I consider books to be friends -- I chose them, they didn't choose me -- and I continue to interact with these "friends" even after upgrading my listening tools. This book is an old friend who tells me the same story every time, true, but I never tire of hearing it because it's told so well...
