Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Take a hard pass
Revisado: 02-07-25
This book seems to have been written by someone with very little exposure to the sea. It is full of highly exaggerated information about sea conditions, weather such as describing hurricanes at Cape Horn, 200 mph wind etc. The book seems to have been glean from a number of journals that convey historical information. Unfortunately, however, this is what went together with a great deal of hyperbole and cliché about life for British sailors. To further compound the problem, the performance on this book is completely over and overdramatized. Also seems clear that the individual reading has very little knowledge of the sea and ships. This is one of the few books that I have abandoned in the last 10 years.

Historia
This is the story of Skip Sands—spy-in-training, engaged in Psychological Operations against the Vietcong—and the disasters that befall him thanks to his famous uncle, a war hero known in intelligence circles simply as the Colonel. This is also the story of the Houston brothers, Bill and James, young men who drift out of the Arizona desert into a war in which the line between disinformation and delusion has blurred away. In its vision of human folly, and its gritty, sympathetic portraits of men and women desperate for an end to their loneliness.

The best Vietnam war fiction I have ever read
Revisado: 05-18-23
This is an incredible book. It feels very real and very realistic with interesting characters and a great storyline. I didn’t feel but it drifted so I’m in the last 25% or so, but still find it to be highly memorable.

Robert Pendleton is a chemical genius with a fertilizer worth a fortune to whoever controls the formula. Not surprisingly, the Bank, his notoriously exclusive backer, wants to keep an eye on its investment. But so does the CIA. And the Chinese government. And a few shadier organizations. So when Pendleton disappears from a conference in San Francisco, along with all of his research, Neal Carey enters the picture.

If you like Winslow, you probably won’t like this
Revisado: 09-24-22
This is the second Neil Carrie novel I have listened to from Don Winslow. He is high on my list of authors from his previous works, but I find this one especially aggravating. I guess he is trying to break out of his California genre, but this book is cram full of a lot of minutia that seems to be designed just to increase the length of the book. Winslow also has great difficulty whenever he is describing romance scenes and female characters. The relationship development in progress in this book is especially unbelievable, and frankly very hard to digest.

Historia
On rare occasion, a fascinating artist will endeavor to peel back the curtain and truly reveal themselves: Their craft, their thoughts, their pain, their humanity. But it is even more rare that the artist actually possesses the range of gifts to pull it off. St. Vincent is such an artist. And St. Vincent: Words plus Music is such an experience.

Self centered pablum
Revisado: 07-28-22
I have listened to several of the Words and Music series and this one is by far the worst. St. Vincent comes across as a spoiled and self-centered. No humility or understanding of how privileged she is. She says things like “music isn’t therapy“ and then proceeds to talk about how music is therapeutic for her. Everything is about her and her lack of awareness of how selfish and ungrateful she sounds is mind boggling.

Historia
Peaceful suburbia on Poplar Street in Wentworth, Ohio, takes a turn for the ugly when four vans containing armed "regulators" terrorize the street's residents, cold-bloodedly killing anyone foolish enough to step outside their homes. Houses mysteriously transform into log cabins, and the street now ends in what looks like a child's hand-drawn Western landscape. Masterminding this sudden onslaught is the evil creature Tak, who has taken over the body of an autistic eight-year-old boy, Seth Garin.

Good story that needs editing
Revisado: 12-27-21
I felt like Stephen King fell in love with his work here in certain areas. He lapsed into long and somewhat tedious descriptions in some of the scenes which really bog down the story. Found myself hitting the jump ahead 30 seconds arrow multiple times.

Historia
In the first book of this brilliant series, Stephen King introduces listeners to one of his most powerful creations: Roland of Gilead, The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which frighteningly mirrors our own, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.

A failed experiment
Revisado: 01-31-21
As a Stephen King fan I found this book to be very weak tea. One of the hallmarks of his work is situations and characters that seems so real. This seems like a meandering experiment he was crying – perhaps to break the mold. I will definitely not be buying the second book. Performance excellent.

The worst book
Revisado: 10-10-19
This is perhaps the worst book of the hundreds I have listened to. It is written with all the sophistication of a 10th grade history paper. The basic story of the Osage and their oil wealth is mildly interesting. Unfortunately the book plods along strewn with cliche descriptions of interactions between whites and Native Americans . Far too much time is wasted belaboring how whites discriminated against Native Americans in the handling of oil wealth. The delivery likewise was pedantic, lifeless and plodding. I have no idea how the publisher arranged for this book to achieve so many high ratings. Do not buy.

From his years serving in British Intelligence during the Cold War, to a career as a writer that took him from war-torn Cambodia to Beirut on the cusp of the 1982 Israeli invasion to Russia before and after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, le Carré has always written from the heart of modern times. In this, his first memoir, le Carré is as funny as he is incisive, reading into the events he witnesses the same moral ambiguity with which he imbues his novels.

I am a great fan of the author. However this book is a disjointed collection of unrelated short recollections. Nothing particularly interesting that gave me any greater knowledge of John LeCarre.

A sunken DC-3 lying on the Caribbean floor. Its cargo: $10.25 million in gold ingots, emeralds and uncut diamonds guarded by the remains of two men, one woman and a very small boy. The fortune was there for the taking, and ready to grab it were a blue-blooded oilman with his own offshore rig, a gangster so cold and independent that even the Mafia couldn't do business with him and a psychopathic hired assassin.

Very good story – a bit slow starting
Revisado: 07-27-18
Alastair McLean is a great writer and this is one of his classics. The performance was abysmal. The reader sounds far too old to be the character which was a continual distraction. Unfortunately most of McLean’s books use John Oliver and I will therefore be unable to listen to them.

Plot and performance lacking
Revisado: 05-02-18
I very nearly deleted this book after the first 30 minutes listening. The near ration has a flat, wooden quality that is hard to take. I decided to tough it out since I had paid for the book. The plot has some dynamic sections but I found it to be somewhat plotting in comparison to other Perry works.
