Historia
As Indigenous scientist and author of Braiding Sweetgrass Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most? Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry’s relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity.

Historia
Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure.

great narration of classic coming of age story
Revisado: 02-09-25
I tried other narrated versions and couldn't get through a single chapter, but Elijah Wood does such an amazing job that I was enchanted to the last word! Twain doesn't tell but rather shows how Huck's experiences matured him, allowing him to diverge from a racist and classicist socialization. trains a good storyteller, especially when it comes to young boys and men on the river. at the same time, I'm glad that Percival Everett has written the book James, which allows us to see a different view of Jim, one which restores not only his freedom but also his intelligence and courage, unlike Twain's stereotype of a superstitious, illiterate, child-like character.

When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Riveting, challenging, ultimately satisfying
Revisado: 01-09-25
I'm glad I chose to listen to the audible version because the narration was amazing, with the changes in accents adding so much to the telling.
The story itself was so riveting that I listened to it over the course of 3 days, even skipping some work I needed to do because I just had hear how the adventures developed. The author made Jim such a believable and noble character, with full humanity, that I kept my fingers crossed for a happy ending.
The way Jim mocks how white people think black people should talk reminded me of Everett's other book, Erasure ( turned into the movie American Fiction). Sometimes a novelist can do a better job of exposing prejudice and ignorance more than a sociological treatise. Sometimes fiction is truer than facts.
The message is as apt now is it would have been in Mark Twain's time. I only wish more Americans were open to being influenced by a brilliant book.

Provocative, funny, perplexing, sad
Revisado: 11-07-24
The author took me along on a journey where I felt empathy for him at every turn and crossroads...I was totally enthralled by the range and depth of emotions in the performance. I was stunned at the ending and constantly dismayed by the level of prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination faced by Asians. And I cried when his father finally lost hope in America. ( I'm starting to feel that way myself and I'm a white-faced woman.). I'm now inspired to see his plays!

Historia
Let Us Descend describes a journey from the rice fields of the Carolinas to the slave markets of New Orleans and into the fearsome heart of a Louisiana sugar plantation. A journey that is as beautifully rendered as it is heart wrenching, the novel is “[t]he literary equivalent of an open wound from which poetry pours” (NPR). Annis, sold south by the white enslaver who fathered her, is the listener’s guide. As she struggles through the miles-long march, Annis turns inward, seeking comfort from memories of her mother and stories of her African warrior grandmother.

lyrical but otherwise lacking
Revisado: 08-15-24
I only read to the end because the author's lyrical descriptions of the experiences and environs of the protagonist were riveting, enchanting, surprising. If I had been eating a written version of the book, I would have quickly skipped all of the parts involving the vengeful, capricious, narcissistic spirit that Annis seems to have conjured up out of nothing. The spirit does not help her when needed but demands gratitude and worship. Unfathomable.

Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

Historia
Have you ever noticed that what is exciting on Monday tends to become boring on Friday? Even passionate relationships, stimulating jobs, and breathtaking works of art lose their sparkle after a while. As easy as it is to stop noticing what is most wonderful in our lives, it’s also possible to stop noticing what is terrible. People get used to dirty air. They become unconcerned by their own misconduct, blind to inequality, and are more liable to believe misinformation than ever before.

A classic work of feminist scholarship, Ain't I a Woman has become a must for all those interested in the nature of Black womanhood. Examining the impact of sexism on Black women during slavery, the devaluation of black womanhood, black male sexism, racism among feminists, and the black woman's involvement with feminism, hooks attempts to move us beyond racist and sexist assumptions. The result is nothing short of groundbreaking, giving this work a critical place in every feminist scholar's library.

I learned a lot i didn't know about black women and feminism.. I concur totally with her inclusive radical definition of feminism... none of us is free until all of us are free. That entails dismantling capitalism and patriarchy--two intertwined systems that keep some people on top and most others struggling.
