A generation later, Star’s son, Charles, is sent to the school, where he is brutalized by the man who was once his father’s jailer. Under Pratt’s harsh treatment, Charles clings to moments he shares with a young fellow student, Opal Viola.

Despite all the pain, hope was in the background
Revisado: 04-01-25
At times, I had a hard time listening to this story. Orange tells the true side of American history. But somehow his characters made it past the horrors of what happened to a spiritual understanding of what really matters.

Historia
Burnt out and in need of retreat, a middle-aged woman leaves Sydney to return to the place she grew up, taking refuge in a small religious community hidden away on the stark plains of rural Australia. She doesn't believe in God, or know what prayer is, and finds herself living this strange, reclusive existence almost by accident.

A profound inward journey
Revisado: 02-17-25
If you told me I’d be praising a book about Catholic nuns, I would have turned my nose up and laughed. This is book is about Catholic nuns, and I loved it! It’s really about a woman’s journey to find peace—she hadn’t recovered from her mother’s death from many years ago. Ironically, it wasn't spiritual in the sense of higher power etc. Instead it was about a woman facing herself and her feelings. Not for the faint hearted but compassionately written in wonderful images. It’s one of the most profound books I’ve read.

Historia
When widowed mule breeder Cy Bellman reads in the newspaper that colossal ancient bones have been discovered in the salty Kentucky mud, he sets out from his small Pennsylvania farm to see for himself if the rumors are true: that the giant monsters are still alive and roam the uncharted wilderness beyond the Mississippi River. Promising to write and to return in two years, he leaves behind his daughter, Bess, to the tender mercies of his taciturn sister and heads west.

A person would believe that deeply, abandoning his daughter
Revisado: 09-17-24
I like more positive endings, and this wasn’t one of them. The main character was an obsessed idiot. He stayed alive because of a young native man-of-honor, who took care of him. Oh the poor daughter-what secret she decided to keep. However, beyond all that, it was well-written. Obviously I believed the author’s story.

A story about everyday people being brave
Revisado: 07-31-24
At first I was put off with the narrative, because the main character was so timid. But faced with the challenges the author presented, she grew into a most delightful character.
