I loved the prequel novella…
Revisado: 05-28-23
But this book really was a let down. It needed a couple more rounds of edits. Everything from the confusing dwindling establishment of spotty world building to the unfocused climax ending with a deus ex polar bear stealing any potential catharsis, to the symbiote sprung on you, to how every time a solution or new element was provided it felt so out of the blue and irritatingly without earlier signaling, to the mystical minority trope, the dead black girl trope, the poc best friend only existing to move forward the white mc’s story along, I could keep going.
I wanted to love this so much, the author is a fantastic person, the narrator did a great job, and I loved the prequel novella, but this let me down on too many fronts to be hidden from review.
I highly encourage you guys to read the prequel novella, I will gladly stand by that as I loved it to pieces.
Thank you to Beka Westrup for the free audio copy in exchange for an honest review.

A podcast focusing on the Bronze Age in the Near East, from the development of agriculture during the Neolithic to the collapse of the Late Bronze Age world system at the end of the second millennium BCE and everything in between. Every episode also includes a look at a particular myth or ancient text. Episodes 1, 17, and 31 are good places to start.

Shameless best friend promotion
Revisado: 02-18-23
My dear friend (the host) is a big history nerd and makes cool things. This podcast is perfect for people who are also history nerds! Love the dual approach of laying out The Factz about ancient societies/how we know what we know while also taking a lighthearted look into what the culture might have looked like through reading their myths. How did we go from tribes to towns to cities to metropolises? How did we invent writing systems? Idk, find out from this podcast!

Historia
Artemisia is training to be a Gray Sister, a nun who cleanses the bodies of the deceased so that their souls can pass on; otherwise, they will rise as ravenous, hungry spirits. She would rather deal with the dead than the living, who whisper about her scarred hands and troubled past. When her convent is attacked by possessed soldiers, Artemisia defends it by awakening an ancient spirit bound to a saint’s relic. It is a revenant, a malevolent being whose extraordinary power almost consumes her - but death has come, and only a vespertine has any chance of stopping it.

Nuns of death/joan of arc/neurodiversity representation
Revisado: 11-29-22
Read it. So metal, yet so soft. You want a joan of arc novel? We got you. You want autism and anxiety representation? We got you. You want a YA without a romance in it? We got you. You want NUNS of DEATH?? We. Got. You.
Just read it.

Misogynistic
Revisado: 05-23-22
The sheer amount of internalized misogyny makes me need to take a shower. At first I thought it was just a bossy main male character. Nope. No. It’s endemic, and the second half REALLY illustrates that. Barely finished, and only because of a new year’s resolution to not dnf.

Sleep aid
Revisado: 12-25-21
I’m really sorry to say this, I really enjoy romance books, but this one just did not keep my attention. Really not interesting or compelling. After trying to get through it for months, I realized it’s best function was to help me sleep, because my brain blots out the words immediately and it becomes reassuring background noise. On the reading: Narrator occasionally slipped into an Irish accent instead of Scottish, but to be fair no non-Scotsman can stay Scottish for that long. Impressive feat, slip-up or no.

I expected more from Riordan
Revisado: 08-08-20
It felt like Riordan wasn’t trying, and was just skating off of the success of Percy Jackson. “And then, she was so happy, that she smiled, and wiped a tear from her eye.”
It’s a lot of lazy writing, and characters forgetting the bricks of information thrown at them, and having to be told again and again and again. And there was zero commitment to Jason’s amnesia. He knew everything and just said “I don’t know how I know that” afterwards, and had zero personality while doing it. I wished I enjoyed it more, Riordan is a talented guy. I just think the ball was dropped on this one.

You’d think since he wrote PoC into the book, he’d know how to pronounce their names.
