Hillary Jordan's mesmerizing debut novel won the Bellwether Prize for fiction. A powerful piece of Southern literature, Mudbound takes on prejudice in its myriad forms on a Mississippi Delta farm in 1946. Tensions continue to rise when her brother-in-law and the son of a family of sharecroppers both return from WWII as changed men bearing the scars of combat.

Historia
In Understanding the Holocaust, Professor David Engel examines the encounter between Germany's Third Reich and the Jews of the 20 European countries that fell under Nazi domination between 1933 and 1945. The results of this encounter stretch human comprehension to the limit and raise frightening questions about the human condition. When it was over, two-thirds of Europe's Jews, some 5.8 million people, had died - and their deaths had occurred amid the most gruesome of circumstances.

Where does The Modern Scholar rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I liked it but this is not for people without a knowledge or background in the Holocaust studies. I have taught the Holocaust to HS students for 33 years and this gives me more in the subject to think about but I believe for the average reader this is going to be a siappointment.

Yet despite his obsession with fitness, he failed to help his clients reach their goals. Something had to give. Manning needed to understand what it was like to be on the other side; he had to spend a few months in his clients' shoes - or rather, size. For six months, Manning radically let himself go. He stopped exercising and ate the typical American diet.

Everything was spelled out predictable.

His voice

Loved the story
Revisado: 05-15-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes I a a history teacher and the book gives an account of the horrible times of Hungary during WWII for the Jews.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes but it kept me running for a month.
Any additional comments?
I would like some other accounts of people in Eastern Europe or Europe in general during WWII that were not Jews. Most of the books I read are great but are written by Jews. I like their prospective and know it was a horrible time for them but I would like other views of the history.

Historia
William Kennedy’s latest novel is a tale of revolutionary intrigue, heroic journalism, crooked politicians, drug-running gangsters, Albany race riots, and the improbable rise of Fidel Castro. The epic journey of Quinn carries him through the nightclubs and jungles of Cuba and into the newsrooms and racially charged streets of Albany on the day than Robert F. Kennedy is assassinated in 1968. The odyssey brings Quinn and his exotic Cuban wife, Renata, face-to-face with the darkest facets of human nature.

OK but not great
Revisado: 03-04-12
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The book jumps from Cuba to Albany. I do not know what the auther wanted to convey to the reader.
Would you be willing to try another book from William Kennedy? Why or why not?
No he jumps around to much.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I liked the Cuban experience but he cut it off as soon as it began to get interesting. I liked some of the characters but roaming around the streets of Albany was just too much.
Did Chango's Beads and Two-Tone Shoes inspire you to do anything?
I guess its a period peice and I just did not get it.
Any additional comments?
Too jumpy for me.

Historia
Somewhere in North Dakota, there is a town called Owl that isn't there. Disco is over, but punk never happened. They don't have cable. They don't really have pop culture, unless you count grain prices and alcoholism. People work hard and then they die. They hate the government and impregnate teenage girls. But that's not nearly as awful as it sounds; in fact, sometimes it's perfect.

Small town America
Revisado: 01-19-12
I'm a teacher in a small town in Montana. The story is great. Many of the charactors are in every town around here. People drink in these towns and the weather is always cold in the winter. It's -20 outside right now. I enjoyed listening to the three stories and they captured small town America in the northern midwest.
