Jane Marie, Expert in her Field
Revisado: 06-27-24
I could listen to Jane Marie for days. Like her podcast this was easy to follow and uncovered more stories of the MLM “cult” I would recommend this to anyone interested in learning more or to anyone interested in joining an MLM to discover the darkness hidden.

Easy to follow
Revisado: 06-27-24
This was a book I read as a young adult and I liked the different perspective I have now as a mother and adult. It’s a sweet story about love and family through hardship. The main character is likable and you find yourself rooting for them. The narration was not my favorite but still easy to follow.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Easy and well written listen
Revisado: 05-15-24
This book was devastatingly open and real. The author walks you through each stage of her life as though you are walking next to her. I found it interesting and didn’t want it to end

Historia
"I was one of 28 children born to my dad and his three wives. Indoctrinated to believe that the outside world was evil, and that I resided among the righteous, I was destined to marry a man chosen for me by the Prophet. I would then live in harmony with my sister-wives, bear many children, and obey and serve my future husband in this life and throughout eternity. But my innocence didn't last long." Flora goes on from there to tell the dramatic true story of how she ultimately escaped and has been rescuing women and children from the FLDS.

Very detailed telling
Revisado: 12-03-23
I found this book to be shockingly detailed from abuse to daily life. I liked the first half the best, the history and the story behind the scenes of growing up. The second half was more of a life narrative which was interesting but more slow and not necessarily needed as long as it was. Overall I thought it was worth the listen.

Historia
What makes “cults” so intriguing and frightening? What makes them powerful? The reason why so many of us binge Manson documentaries by the dozen and fall down rabbit holes researching suburban moms gone QAnon is because we’re looking for a satisfying explanation for what causes people to join - and more importantly, stay in - extreme groups. We secretly want to know: could it happen to me? Amanda Montell’s argument is that, on some level, it already has.

Interesting
Revisado: 12-03-23
This is an interesting take on many of the types of groups we see as cults. The book is wordy and I found myself unfocused at times.

Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines.

Brave and interesting
Revisado: 11-08-23
The story was well told and interesting. It was easy to follow though it was not the best narration. While I appreciated the author reading her story it definitely was apparent that it was being read with less fluency than a voice actor. That did once I got used to it it didn't take a way from the story and I enjoyed it over all.
