Like the earlier books in this series, this is an e enjoyable mystery with a strong voice in the smart. sweet Ellery. This is mostly a new set of characters in Ellery's old friends, but they still offer a fun group of potential victims and suspects. Watson the dog is a delight, as is the setting. Captain's Seat is almost a character itself. All in all, another solid story with the only issue the lack of chemistry and believability in the relationship between Ellery and Jack. Actually, the unlikeable Jack's lesser presence in this book is a positive. It's just annoying that we have to listen to Ellery constantly say how great Jack is. I adore Ellery and he deserves so much better than Jack, who has consistently harassed the wrong people and made poor choices throughout the series. Admittedly, he suffers from 'Inspector Lestrade' syndrome - he has to bumble and accuse innocents so Ellery can save the day and solve the case, but he does it so unpleasantly that he is a fail as any kind of love interest. Instead, he functions as more of an adversary. So seeing him really sidelined in this book is a positive. Ellery shines yet again..

This keeps the suspense up from start to finish. Griff is a very likeable and sympathetic voice throughout. Pierce is rather a jerk, to put it mildly, and I felt they fell into bed too fast. Also, Pierce has a lot to answer for in his behavior that I don't think he was fully called to account for. Griff is too forgiving. While I enjoy most of JL's writing, this is one continual issue - pairing up truly sweet men with assholes that don't deserve them. Other than that 1 pet peeve, this is a clever nailbiter of a story

This is a fun adventure tale of anthropology and paranormal mystery. Kit Sawyer is a delightful character. Sadly, Josh Lanyon seems to be a master of pairing up sweet, smart, extremely likeable men with arrogant assholes. A case in point here. Still, besides the annoying Ethan, this is strongly worth a listen. Kit has a funny, charming voice and the myths and magic here are well done.

This is a fun entry in this clever cozy mystery series. The cast of eccentric secondary characters are delightful and Ellery continues to be charming, smart and extremely likeable. The only problem is the unlikeable love interest and unbelievable relationship - Ellery starts excusing Jack's horrible behavior far too quickly and doesn't hold him to account enough. An arrest in less than 24 hours? Before autopsy and forensics lab results are done? And punching at a suspect, resulting in hitting Ellery? That's unacceptable. Ellery should dump Jack for the hot doctor, Robert. But the mystery was complex and surprising, and Watson steals all his scenes. Excellent narration and wonderful voice for Ellery.

Kip is wonderful and his friends are hilarious and eccentric in just the right ways. Solid cozy mystery with an intriguing solution. Only negative is the jerk of a love interest who doesn't deserve Kip and Kip's too quick forgiveness. Kip should have given him hell a lot longer than he does and demanded a serious apology for poor behavior for of his officers. The local police force behaves terribly and Kip should have made Merrick take responsibility and him them accountable instead of taking their part against the man he 'supposedly' loves. I just couldn't find their relationship believable. Kip's sole fault is being too much of a pushover and not standing up for himself as much as he should. Otherwise, he's utterly charming.
