Best scholarly book about Oz I’ve ever read - and I’ve read them all. An intelligent and insightful analysis of Oz and Baum’s life.

Historia
In the latest installment of The Vampire Chronicles, Anne Rice summons up dazzling worlds to bring us the story of Armand—eternally young, with the face of a Botticelli angel. We go with Armand across the centuries to the Kiev Rus of his boyhood - a ruined city under Mongol dominion—and to ancient Constantinople, where Tartar raiders sell him into slavery. And in a magnificent palazzo in the Venice of the Renaissance we see him emotionally and intellectually in thrall to the great vampire Marius.

I’ve liked Rice’s writing for decades, even when it’s a little heavy handed, and I understand she had a religious rebirth, but this Catholic mysticism’s incorporation into the Vampire Tales is annoying, cloying and makes no real sense to this reader. The book boarders on idiotic, no matter how well written it is.

Historia
Hawaii was not always a paradise. Hawaii's history was turbulent and soul wrenching. Taboos placed on commoners by Royalty were harsh and cruel. But Hawaii also has its wonderful historic lore, such as the Menehunes, or Hawaii's "little people". Listeners will also learn the true history of the ukulele and its origin may be a surprise.

Misinformation & Mispronunciations
Revisado: 01-18-22
Hawaiian phonetics are easy and consistent but the narrator makes numerous mistakes that I found annoying. Further, I question much of the book’s accuracy. The author apparently relied on sources that have long been discredited.

Historia
Polynesian mythology is intricate, complex, and the ideals behind some of their mythological beliefs were often intertwined with real life events. This book will examine how both myth and fact contributed to the culture and traditions of the Polynesians, and how these influences and some stories continue to live on throughout the centuries.

Pronunciations are grossly inaccurate
Revisado: 01-10-22
Mau’i is pronounced mow-EE not mow-why. Pele is pronounced pay-lay not pell-uh. Hawaiian phonetics are simple and easy to learn but the narrator made no effort in that regard. Shameful.
