Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Strange world, strange mind
Revisado: 11-10-24
Somehow go to a mysterious other world, the labyrinth and forget who you are. It’s a strange concept brought to some life by the story and entertainment enough I couldn’t put it down. But ultimately I am left wondering, and wishing I had read with others to get further input into the meaning, as the story does not fill in all the blanks.

Historia
A man awakens in a clearing in what appears to be medieval England with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is there. Chased by a group from his own time, his sole hope for survival lies in regaining his missing memories, making allies among the locals, and perhaps even trusting in their superstitious boasts. His only help from the “real world” should have been a guidebook entitled The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, except his copy exploded during transit.

Historia
When unforeseen circumstances during an innovative—and unsanctioned—commercial asteroid-mining mission leave two crew members stranded, those who make it back must engineer a rescue, all while navigating a shifting web of global political alliances and renewed Cold War tensions. With Earth governments consumed by the ravages of climate change and unable to take the risks necessary to make rapid progress in space, the crew must build their own next-gen spacecraft capable of mounting a rescue in time for the asteroid's next swing by Earth.

Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

Strong holistic overview
Revisado: 05-17-24
The author has a strong standpoint and fact based approach. The writing is exceptionally clear and prescriptive. I remain skeptical of what feels like an extremist position, but do feel phone usage is out of control even in myself.

Historia
What if a society banished its worst nightmare to the far edge of the solar system, destined to sip dregs of light and struggle for the barest living? What if that life thrived, grew, learned, and became far more than anyone ever expected, yearning to return to the sun? What if it didn't share your moral compass in any way? The Glittering Edge duology describes the clash of forces when an advanced society that has filled a solar system with flesh-and-blood life meets the near-AIs it banished long ago.

Great Conceptual Sci-Fi
Revisado: 05-06-16
Would you listen to Edge of Dark again? Why?
I don't usually re-listen to books - so this is an odd question to answer. There are a number of characters you are introduced to here and this is essentially their origin story, so if the next books take them far from their starting points I could see coming back to listen again. This was a great book to listen to.
Who was your favorite character and why?
This book is about the concept of transferring a human consciousness into machine bodies. The book looks at this from many angles, many of them concerned and frightened with the thought of losing a part of our humanity or our souls. Yi is transferred and is an analytical scientist - and seems to have a much different opinion that resonated with my own initial thought. He was enthusiastic and examined the positives - the knowledge, new capabilities, reduction of limitations, etc.
What does Soneela Nankani bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Soneela fit the main character, Nona exceptionally well. There was a youth and innocence in how she narrated the story. At times it might have leaned too far into whining for my taste, but it was appropriate in how Nona was experiencing the world.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Humanity must face the evolution of their own experimentation.
Any additional comments?
I really enjoy conceptual scifi - stories that take a singular question or idea and build a story around it to examine it from a variety of angles. This is a great example of a solid concept turned into a fascinating story. Much of sci-fi stories may lean towards military and war stories, or be cold and analytical, or go the more thrilling and horror route.
This story stands out as much more about the human experience when faced with a plausible yet fantastic situation of machines coming back from banishment seeking to unbanish themselves. Would you fear them, would you join them, help them, sympathize with them, refuse them? There is a lot of exploration of a variety of feelings around the concept, but not too much that the story loses momentum.
Looking forward to listening to the next book.

Huntress gone girly
Revisado: 02-13-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Either the book would have been written to keep the main character to her hunter ways and forget the pining over boys and kissing, or else a different narrator would lend a less perky slant to the content.
What could Ann Aguirre have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The huntress main character starts discovering being a girl, getting in dresses, and kissing boys. The story of the freaks, of the outpost, of salvation was so much better. Everything else was just getting in the way and had me rolling my eyes a lot.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Emily Bauer?
I don't have a name in mind. But it would be a female narrator with a more gravelly, alto voice. More chip on the shoulder and less perky. Think girl with the dragon tattoo.
What character would you cut from Outpost?
I actually like the characters. They have their place in a story about post-apocolyptic world. But we don't need this book-long back and forth over boys. It sounds very typically male even to me, so I just say that if you are here for the sci-fi, it took a back seat to a love triangle.
Any additional comments?
I'll still probably grab the third book in the series to complete the story, as I'm genuinely captured by the world and the mystery of the freaks. I just hope the main characters put their emotions down and get on with the story.
