Historia
Do you believe in magic? Caroline, Charles and Charlotte do, and nothing that happens during their summer holiday at their great uncle's house does anything to diminish that belief. There the Three C.'s find a wonderful garden and some very old books, resulting in escapades which do not necessarily please the grown-ups. E. Nesbit, as usual, transports us back to the hazy summer days of a well-to-do Edwardian childhood, liberally spiced with magic, humour and lessons learned.

Rambling and pointless ending
Revisado: 08-16-19
Disappointed. Looking for a charming English story, but this ended up being pointless and unfulfilling. It's like the author kept writing hoping a story would come together but gives up and just tries to get out of it by abruptly abandoning the storyline and artificially tying it up in a sloppy bow at the end. Never came to really like the characters either, so found this overall very unfulfilling and wished I had spent the time on a better book.

Historia
Following up on the classic children's novel The Saturdays, Elizabeth Enright continues the engaging tale of the Melendy family (Mona, Rush, Randy, Oliver, Father, and Cuffy, the housekeeper) and their move from an old brownstone in New York City to a charming house in the country. Called the Four-Story Mistake for its odd look and confused architectural history, the house offers the Melendys wonderful quirks and surprises.

Excellent narration
Revisado: 07-30-19
Both my 5th grade class, as well as my children ages 8-18, all loved this reading of this wonderful book in the Melendy Quartet. In 5th grade we are working on understanding how a sentence and paragraph should sound when reading. The fabulous reading by Ms. Dillman was just what they needed, and they commented repeatedly how they loved her narration. I had plenty of quick readers, but their "prosody" was poor, which significantly affected their comprehension of the text. Hearing this excellent narration first helped them to enthusiastically enjoy this story and fall in love with the characters, which then lead to a much deeper and more accurate understanding of the text as well as increasing their interest in the vocabulary. This book was a stretch for 5th grade (more suited to slightly older students, though all ages will enjoy the story), but they had begged me for a book with a happy ending which is actually quite difficult to find now. All of my own children wanted to read and/or hear the other three books in the series after hearing this book.

Great story, not so great narration
Revisado: 10-22-18
I very much enjoyed this story of early ranching life in Colorado, but the narration was very distracting at times. Mr. Beierle's imitation of a woman's voice is just plain irritating and ridiculous. I did enjoy the story and writing though so that I do want to seek other the next book in this series and read the paper copy.
