Historia
When lawyer Jenny Cooper is appointed Severn Vale District Coroner, she's hoping for a quiet life and space to recover from a traumatic divorce, but the office she inherits from the recently deceased Harry Marshall contains neglected files hiding dark secrets and a trail of buried evidence. Could the tragic death in custody of a young boy be linked to the apparent suicide of a teenage prostitute and the fate of Marshall himself?

Dry but engaging!
Revisado: 09-15-24
I found myself drawn in and engrossed by this courtroom drama! I wish there was a little more explanation, one of the murders only got an epilogue mention in how it was wrapped up… I would have like to see more detail about how it was solved. I suppose though, a less than satisfying explanation makes certain elements more realistic. Enjoyable if you enjoy the “law” side of Law and Order! (Also as an American I had no problem following along with UK legal proceedings, the author made it easy to wrap my head around it!)

Historia
From New York Times best-selling author Erik Larson comes his first venture into fiction, an otherworldly tale of intrigue and the impossible that marshals his trademark approach to nonfiction to create something new: a ghost story thoroughly grounded in history. Pioneering psychologist William James leads an expedition to a remote isle in search of answers after a family inexplicably vanishes. Was the cause rooted in the physical world...or were there forces more paranormal and sinister at work?

Dry but interesting
Revisado: 09-03-24
This book is like eating tasty crackers with nothing to wash it down with. I was hoping for something scarier, with more payoff. It meandered, dropping little crumbs that never quite lead anywhere. Still, I stuck with it which says a lot. The narrator did a great job keeping me engaged.

Subtext is for cowards
Revisado: 08-21-24
What was the point of the knife? Of the sleepwalking? Of mentioning a good friend in chapter 2 that was never brought up again? It felt like there’s a good story in this book somewhere, but it got lost in prose that felt at best purple and at worst redundant. I felt like this story assumed I was an idiot with the way it hammered ideas home— a little subtlety goes a long way, and I could have been told half as much and been twice as happy.
Still, it was enjoyable. I couldn’t figure out if we were supposed to hate the main character (to me she was insufferable), or feel like she was even more unhinged than the villain of the story… which I kind of like. Jeremy on the other hand was too perfect, he could have done with a flaw or two.
The book was a good length. Any longer I wouldn’t have finished it. Maybe I’m being too critical, but I just kept thinking, “get on with it.”

Historia
Persephone is the Goddess of Spring by title only. The truth is, since she was a little girl, flowers have shriveled at her touch. After moving to New Athens, she hopes to lead an unassuming life disguised as a mortal journalist. Hades, God of the Dead, has built a gambling empire in the mortal world and his favorite bets are rumored to be impossible. After a chance encounter with Hades, Persephone finds herself in a contract with the God of the Dead and the terms are impossible: Persephone must create life in the Underworld or lose her freedom forever.

For such an adult story, it’s written like a Disney film, filled to the brim with tropes and obnoxious character. The premise was interesting, and there were a few ideas within the story that held so much promise, but it’s bogged down with pointless chatter, a childish main character, and enough tropes you’ll be tripping over them for the entire story.
I wish we had more of a reason to root for Persephone, but she comes off as whiny and bratty, willfully ignorant and shallow. The Hades as a byronic billionaire… can we stop with this sub-genre already?
One thing that really bothered me was how baking was set up to be her hobby, something she loved to do, and yet it’s only mentioned once, clearly a setup for a scene of Hades in the kitchen, which was eye-rollingly fluffy. It’s light on mythology, positioning the gods more as glorified celebrities or royalty. Oh, and why do all the gods have horns?
If you want a your smut with a low-stakes, trope-filled fluff-fest, you’ll probably enjoy this book. If you’re looking for something with more meat on the bone… This ain’t it. (The narrator didn’t help.)

Cringe
Revisado: 12-04-23
I could overlook every character having the same voice, but there were too many tiny unnecessary details where I felt my eyes rolling (who describes a tattoo typeface as “satanic?” or thinks URLs need to be written in lower case?)— added to that main character who think they are more interesting than everyone around them. It’s like being stuck at a party talking to someone who is trying way too hard to make you think they are clever, and never gets around to telling you the story.
When I got to the “sin eater” chapter i had to stop. “Sin Eating” is not the same as “fixing”. Way too cringe to to listen any further.
The narrator isn’t bad, but it sounds like they are just as interested in the story as i was. Give this one a pass.

Whatever happened to agency?
Revisado: 11-26-23
Our lead character bumbles his way through the story, thwarted by cartoonish villains and an array of befuddling medieval stereotypes. They make an interesting foil for the main character, who seems uncharacteristically modern in his thinking, which kept pulling me out of the story. He was like the straight man in a month python skit. Wish he did more to figure the mystery out, and wish we saw him grow a little more as a character. Not a bad story, but not that compelling either. Narration is kind of bland.

Narration above all
Revisado: 11-25-23
I was expecting, the with return of arch-villain Alister Ashcroft, a thrilling climax. What I got was an anti-climactic, meandering story, where the mystery is solved for the detectives. Characters lack agency as the tale unfolds around them, and interesting threads and character moments are dropped and never expanded upon. I’ve kept with this series because Mr. Armitage’s narration is flawless, and I enjoy listening to his characters and cadence so much, I can deal with any book no matter how underwhelming. I did enjoy this book more than the previous one, but it still left me feeling like it needed more. It’s not awful, but it is bland.

Historia
New York City in 1978 is a dirty, dangerous place to live - and die. Joey Peacock knows this as well as anybody - he has spent the last forty years as an adolescent vampire, perfecting the routine he now enjoys: womanizing in punk clubs and discotheques, feeding by night, and sleeping by day with others of his kind in the macabre labyrinth under the city's sidewalks.

You were warned…
Revisado: 11-04-23
It’s not a nice story. It’s not a happy story. But it is a compelling one, equal parts terrifying, triumphant and tragic, and told in such a naturalistic, charmingly disjointed way… nothing about this book is straightforward, even though that’s the way it presents itself. The scary elements sometimes almost feel secondary, but the subtle body horror woven throughout the story left me unsettled long after I finished the book. Action, wit, charm and lore, all drenched in the filth and glamor of 1970s New York. This book is a trip. And to anyone who says they didn’t like the ending… well, they *were* warned…
Buehlman has quickly become my favorite contemporary author. I cannot get enough of his prose, and each of his stories has stuck with me long after I’ve put the book down.

Insufferable main character
Revisado: 10-30-23
The main character was too insufferable to finish the book. From all the instances where it was proved she was “not like the other girls”, constantly eating yet staying noticeably slender, putting her father on a pedestal yet never mourning his death… I stopped listening when religion started to be shoehorned into the story. (I use the word “story” loosely.) I was hoping for a mystery… the real mystery is how this book got published.

It’s a classic…
Revisado: 10-30-23
…and that’s why I gave Hell House a go! Interesting characters, and all the tropes you could want from a haunted house story. A few truly gruesome scenes, and more boobs than I expected (not in a sexy way…Unless sex with ghosts is your thing? If it is, no judgement). Keep in mind this is a story that shows it’s age. Even so, there’s a lot to enjoy. Or not, I dunno.
