Nightmare Narration
Revisado: 08-27-18
Never-ending "vocal fry" by Bailey's story narrator is generally irritating and postively unbearable for male characters. Sarah's narrator isn't as bad, but she has a habit of ending sentences with a breathy, downward inflection. Returning this one.

Historia
A Catskills resort's production of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet takes a wickedly ironic turn when the leading lady, Lauren Richmond, is first poisoned and then stabbed. Who would extinguish the life of such a beautiful young thespian? It seems like just about everyone had a motive to pull the ropes on her final curtain call. At the center of this Shakespearean tragedy is Charlotte Fairfax, formerly the costume mistress of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Couldn't Finish
Revisado: 11-18-15
One narrator attempting an entirely different and occasionally bizarre voice for every single character? Bad directorial choice! Some variations in pitch and rythmn normally help listeners identify various characters, but this is WAY over the top. Returning this one.

Historia
He crept forward between the tall narrow aisles created by the shelves. Just before he reached the corner he heard a thump, the sound of a body hitting the floor. He rushed forward into the corner of the room. The desk was empty. The chair was pushed up against it, neatly awaiting its usual occupant. No one was in the corner. No one was there to make the sound. No one...alive.

Murder By Narrator
Revisado: 04-27-14
The Mary O'Reilly series is fun, and I'd hoped the audiobooks would be perfect for road trip listening. But I'm abandoning that hope and will finish Book 3 in Kindle edition. I'm sure Erin Spencer is a perfectly nice person, but her narration is unbearable. Her use of glottal fry ("croaky throat") to signal a male voice, coupled with her habit of pausing for several beats before adding "s/he said" after each sentence of dialogue has finally become too distracting; Mary & Bradley will have to carry on without me listening.

Good Story, Irritating Performance
Revisado: 04-01-14
I've enjoyed the entire Will Lee series and was looking forward to listening to The Run during a long trip. Unfortunately, I found Ken Howard's vocal choices so irritating as to ruin the book. His habit of ending sentences with a downward inflection and volume decreasing to a near-whisper with flattened vocal tones made the characters sound like demented serpents. I'm sure that Ken Howard is a lovely person with many credits to his name, but he lost me on this performance. I'll read the rest of The Run to find out what happens.
