Historia
Sasha Chapin is a victim of chess. Like countless amateurs before him - Albert Einstein, Humphrey Bogart, Marcel Duchamp - the game has consumed his life and his mind. First captivated by it as a member of his high school chess club, his passion was rekindled during an accidental encounter with chess hustlers on the streets of Kathmandu. In its aftermath, he forgot how to care about anything else. He played at all hours, for weeks at a time. Like a spurned lover, he tried to move on, but he found the game more seductive the more he resisted it.

This is an interesting story, very well written and told by a man exploring the limits of his skill and passion by delving into the world of tournament chess. It's an entertaining incite into that world which is filled with interesting characters and few surprises as the author learns what it takes to be great.

Historia
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

Historia
After three acclaimed novels - The Russian Debutante's Handbook, Absurdistan, and Super Sad True Love Story - Gary Shteyngart turns to memoir in a candid, witty, deeply poignant account of his life so far.
Shteyngart shares his American immigrant experience, moving back and forth through time and memory with self-deprecating humor, moving insights, and literary bravado. The result is a resonant story of family and belonging that feels epic and intimate and distinctly his own. Provocative, hilarious, and inventive, Little Failure reveals a deeper vein of emotion in Gary Shteyngart' s prose.

very good listen
Revisado: 07-15-20
I really enjoyed this audiobook. The author is very funny and his life story is very interesting. Russian immigrant, challenging, quirky parents(ultimately loving), dealing with American kids as both a Jewish person and from a country which most Americans despised at the time of the author's arrival. The narrator was excellent, very good with Russian accents, a very good fit with the author's words. Well done!

Historia
At 21, Kathy Valentine was at the Whisky in Los Angeles when she met a guitarist from a fledgling band called the Go-Go's - and the band needed a bassist. The Go-Go's became the first multi-platinum-selling, all-female band to play instruments themselves, write their own songs, and have a number one album. But for Valentine, the band's success was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream - but it's only part of her story. All I Ever Wanted traces the path that took her from her childhood in Texas - where she all but raised herself - to the height of rock n' roll stardom.

Historia
One of the most admired nonfiction writers of our time retells the story of one truly fabulous year in the life of his native country - a fascinating and gripping narrative featuring such outsized American heroes as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and yes Herbert Hoover, and a gallery of criminals (Al Capone), eccentrics (Shipwreck Kelly), and close-mouthed politicians (Calvin Coolidge). It was the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things and came of age in a big, brawling manner. What a country. What a summer. And what a writer to bring it all so vividly alive.

This book covers a lot of ground during what was an interesting time in US history. Bryson explores a lot of topics including, politics, sports, aviation, automobiles, media, finance, crime, and includes a colorful cast of characters that highlight the many interesting stories within this book. As usual with Bryson his prose never fails to both inform and entertain.

Pulitzer Prize, Biography, 2016. Barbarian Days is William Finnegan's memoir of an obsession, a complex enchantment. Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates it is something else entirely: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life.

Enjoyable listen
Revisado: 12-15-19
I liked this audiobook very much. The author has lived a very interesting, very searching life. He has traveled extensively, has met many interesting people and been exposed to fascinating cultures. I enjoyed the author's prose and being a former surfer(and former reader of surfing books/magazines) was pleasantly surprised by his humorous, thoughtful and refined form of expression, very unusual in the surfing universe by my experience. The book gets very descriptive when the author discusses waves and surfing breaks and clearly that is largely the point of the book but I would argue there's too much detail on those specific topics at times. Then again, I think most nonfiction books go into too much detail. The author's observations on people, culture, politics, family, career, and location far exceed anything negative I have to offer. Well done, Mr. Finnegan.

This was an excellent story and Kate Winslet told it perfectly. She used many voices and it was so entertaining for my kids(age 7 and 9).
