Amazing
Revisado: 08-30-24
I am a child of the 60s, so therefore I feel I was steeped also in the whole revolutionary quality of everything I found this reporting to be so amazing. I'm 10 years younger and so I think that what we were fighting for etc. was so different than the generation ahead of us who had the ability to think clearly about some issues, I am so grateful to Doris Kearns Goodwin for teaching this to me. To be fair to my generation, we were busy working on women's rights at the high school level, dress codes, demonstrating, etc. that it was really hard to think beyond that I had so many friends who really did not want to fight in the Vietnam War, and had to be ingenious as to avoid it or they got drafted.
This said my father is one of the founders of Headstart and I was surprised that she didn't focus on any of the programs that were really focused on pre-K for young people of color or under privilege. As a teacher I really wanted to hear more about that, I understand this is part of my father's baby because this was his conception as in Headstart, but I wish it had been more focused on. Why do I say this because our country again is falling apart, and perhaps if the dictates of all of these programs had really been taken to practice we may not be where we are today. young lives matter!
I again would say this book blew me out of the water and I would hope that parts of this could be taught in the high school curriculum… I'm still trying to figure out how to convince teachers of today to incorporate this. I am retired and I work in the school still because I am a huge believer in public education.
Also because I believe my generation lived this all ..hopefully people will vote now with their deepest gut.

Really trashy
Revisado: 08-30-24
I'm really bothered that this is the kind of free stuff that audible offers since they're so expensive. I found this really disappointing and trashy. If you want pulp fiction on a really low level, go ahead and listen to it. I just needed something mellow or not heavy duty, and I found this so poorly written and awful -for shame audible!!! You charge too much to do this kind of poor literature. A really weak story.

Absolutely quintessentially wonderful book
Revisado: 05-05-23
I absolutely recommend this book! Often I recommend using public libraries because of the return policy with Amazon and Audible, which is really time consuming. This book is absolutely fantastic. Read it. Listen to it think about it 15 billion stars for this.

This was not developed enough, and too many "happy endings". I had such hope that this book would be more intense- it is not.

Set in a wealthy Parisian suburb, an emotionally riveting debut told from the point of view of six women, and centered around a group of au pairs, one of whom is arrested after a sudden and suspicious tragedy strikes her host family—a dramatic exploration of identity, class, and caregiving from a profoundly talented new writer.

What is this author really trying to say?
Revisado: 06-20-22
I feel that the author does protest too much- was she an aupair? She gives an impression of being anti French. I find this offensive- people can be awful, but especially in the aupair world this is not just an issue with the French! Did she choose to leave the reader up in the air as to any ending because in many great novels this is done, but this is NOT a great novel. A good story, but then again it falls flat. The end is not balanced for this style of writing.

One of the most important stories of World War II, already optioned by Steven Spielberg for a major motion picture: a spectacular, searing history that brings to light the extraordinary accomplishments of brave Jewish women who became resistance fighters - a group of unknown heroes whose exploits have never been chronicled in full, until now.

Not a great story too predictable
Revisado: 10-14-18
I keep thinking I have submitted my review but I guess I haven’t. I was so interested in the book to begin with but I felt that it was easy to figure out immediately who is who who is related to whom etc. etc. so the author did not keep me very much in suspense. I was disappointed, but then again I wondered about the country club leanings of the author and her lack of truly understanding the human condition.

Revisado: 03-29-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
There is a poor story development compared to what was possible. She lost me after halfway through the novel- otherwise I would have returned it. Highly disappointing!
Has The Pieces We Keep turned you off from other books in this genre?
I will not look at her books
What aspect of Saskia Maarleveld’s performance would you have changed?
..she was not the problem!! The author is!
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Films and novels are often 2 different entities. Her novel is not well written.
Any additional comments?
I was so disappointed and looking forward to well crafted novel and the author did not complete the task!
