Historia
In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

If you want to delve deeper into Japanese history, in chronological order, and see the main events that transformed Japan into what it is today, you've just hit the jackpot.

Narration copletely spoiled it
Revisado: 09-26-18
Listening to the narrator stumble over the Japanese names and places was almost painful. And he mispronounced English too. Sadly, he made an interesting book impossible to listen to.

I loved it at first - then it was okay. I hated the ending (oh and the download stopped a few minutes early but I didn't care enough to find out the rest). It got farther and farther out as it went on and eventually dropped off the edge.

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Historia
In The Butchering Art, the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of 19th-century surgery on the eve of profound transformation. She conjures up early operating theaters - no place for the squeamish - and surgeons, working before anesthesia, who were lauded for their speed and brute strength. They were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. A young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister would solve the deadly riddle and change the course of history.

the first 3/4 is worth the price
Revisado: 06-23-18
I love non-fiction about the life and/or works of famous scientists and this book was no exception - for the first 75%. Once the discovery was made however, the remainder - getting his work accepted - was a bit of a letdown.
The first part, the state of medicine and surgery in the first half of the 1800 was chillingly real and wonderfully explained.
The book is worth the price if only for the first 3/4.
