Historia
The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains. But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend. The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

A lot to think about, most of it great.
Revisado: 07-29-23
It's so easy to fully immerse into the vivid worlds Pierce Brown builds. As others have mentioned, there is a shift from the ensemble PoV narrators from the last 2 books. I'm having difficulty deciding whether some elements of the story fail to resonate well due to the tone TGR takes with some of the characters, or if I just wasn't satisfied by certain character arcs. It feels like some individuals (and even some entire groups) change their fundamental natures a bit abruptly from the previous 2 books, and one character in particular feels entirely like a "Red Herring" - but I'll wait until the Red God to decide if that opinion is warranted. I did just cram 30 hours of audio into a 4 day window in between 10 hour workdays.
Despite that, it will require another pass once I'm ready. There are enough great scenes and traumas to think about for some time. Atlas has become one of my favorite "villians" and is well named "The Fear Knight"

Historia
The boy has lived his whole life trapped within a book-choked chamber older than empires and larger than cities. The girl has been plucked from the outskirts of civilization to be trained as a librarian, studying the mysteries of the great library at the heart of her kingdom. They were never supposed to meet. But in the library, they did. Their stories spiral around each other, across worlds and time. This is a tale of truth and lies and hearts, and the blurring of one into another.

Historia
Drawing on previously unpublished eyewitness accounts, prizewinning historian Donald L. Miller has written what critics are calling one of the most powerful accounts of warfare ever published. Here are the horror and heroism of World War II in the words of the men who fought it, the journalists who covered it, and the civilians who were caught in its fury. Miller gives us an up-close, deeply personal view of a war that was more savagely fought - and whose outcome was in greater doubt - than one might imagine. This is the war that Americans on the home front would have read about had they had access to previously censored testimony.

Exceptionally Lucid
Revisado: 01-29-20
A highly poignant overall view of WWII that outlines salient events in the war, interspersed with accounts from its survivors - the soldiers, sailors, commanders, politicians, medics, townsfolk..Allied/Axis. The perspectives weave seamlessly, and at the end the reader has a visceral understanding of Wars horrific nature.
It's a great place to start for someone curious about WWII - and covers many topics worthy of further reading.
I found myself feeling fury, empathy, sorrow, hope, inspiration, and a need for reflection by the end- and I've studied the subject for years. Not a lot of historical non-fiction books are so gripping (even if the subject matter is.)
The narrator does a great job pacing and his voice is authoritative and engaging.

Zahn and Thompson at their best
Revisado: 07-24-19
I found Treason to be much more enjoyable than Alliances (although I liked that story, too). My only complaint is somewhat petty, but the sound effects on the Chiss vessel sounds too much like "Boyz in tha Hood"(the song). But this isn't the first SW audiobook to make use of this particular sound effect. The characters seem written for Marc Thompson, and his performance is excellent - and without over the top alien dialects (think the New Republic Senate leader or the winged bird things in Hand of Thrawn duology. Very enjoyable.

Excellent big picture look at Pacific Theatre.
Revisado: 12-04-17
While other books on WW2 have more in-depth looks at individual islands (as Eugene Sledge's "With the Old Breed" does with Peleilu and Okinawa), I always wanted a good comprehensive book of all the islands to see the bigger picture -from the Marines point of view. That last one is important. I'm thankful I found this.

Perfect entry point into SW audiobook universe.
Revisado: 09-27-17
Was so glad I found this trilogy on several SW "best of" lists and took a chance on this as my first venture into SW audiobooks. I didn't know anything about Thrawn, or any of the other expanded universe characters like Talon Kard or Mara Jade, but they were so well written I now can't think of the SWU without them. It's canon to me.
This was also my first experience with Marc Thompson, and he had me seriously questioning whether Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill lent their voices to the production until I broke down and looked him up. I've now heard just about all of his narrating efforts and still think this is some of his best work. Some of the newer books (e.g. Aftermath) feel like the producers are pushing him for" more over the top" performances, and when every characters inner observations drip with fury, cynicism, arrogance, or any other tones it becomes distracting. This series is Marc Thompson at his finest - and Thrawn as a character is clearly and perfectly brought to life as much by the narrator as by the author.
Suspiciously, all SW audiobooks seem to have no less than a 4 star rating on the site. There are several duds, despite what Amazon says, but you won't find any in this trilogy. The individual and overall storylines are cohesive, and it is fun to envision the colorful and varied cast of both familiar and new characters.
