Historia
A thirty-four-year-old American woman—a secret agent—is sent to do dirty work in France. “Sadie Smith” is how the narrator introduces herself to her lover, to the rural commune of French subversives on whom she is keeping tabs, and to the reader. Sadie has met her love, Lucien, a young and well-born Parisian, by “cold bump”—making him believe the encounter was accidental. Like everyone Sadie targets, Lucien is useful to her and used by her. Sadie operates by strategy and dissimulation, based on what her “contacts”—shadowy figures in business and government—instruct.

Worst book ever written even worse narration
Revisado: 03-03-25
Rachel Kushner’s Creation Lake follows Sadie Smith, a spy-for-hire surveilling Le Moulin, an anarchic environmentalist commune in rural France, alongside the intercepted emails of Bruno Lacombe, a reclusive eccentric revered by the group. On paper, its mix of espionage and philosophical musings suggests the kind of offbeat fiction often praised as “discursive” and “weird.” In execution, though, it’s the worst book I’ve ever read—pedantic, boring, and cynically constructed. Too slow and cumbersome to be a thriller, too devoid of intrigue for a spy novel. The entire time, I kept asking myself how this book even got published. If I could give it a minus five, I would.

Hollywood Hijinks: *Laughing Gas* Brought to Life by Simon Prebble's Brilliant Narration
Revisado: 08-06-24
**Audiobook Review: *Laughing Gas* by P.G. Wodehouse, Narrated by Simon Prebble**
*Laughing Gas* is a delightful listen that transports you straight to 1930s Hollywood, full of humor and quirky characters. The story follows Reggie, an Englishman, and Joey Cooley, a mischievous child star, who accidentally swap bodies at the dentist, leading to hilarious misadventures in Tinseltown.
Simon Prebble, the narrator, truly excels, bringing Wodehouse’s humor to life with his dynamic performance. He skillfully captures the voice of young Joey as well as the adults around him, making each character distinct and memorable. Prebble's delivery adds an extra layer of charm, making it easy to get lost in the story and feel like you’re right there in old Hollywood.
If you’re looking for an audiobook that’s both funny and nostalgic, *Laughing Gas* is a perfect pick. The combination of Wodehouse’s wit and Simon Prebble’s engaging narration makes it an entertaining escape.

Hawke's narrator is a young man in torment, disgusted with himself after the collapse of his marriage, still half hoping for a reconciliation that would allow him to forgive himself and move on as he clumsily, and sometimes hilariously, tries to manage the wreckage of his personal life with whiskey and sex. What saves him is theater: in particular, the challenge of performing the role of Hotspur in a production of Henry IV under the leadership of a brilliant director, helmed by one of the most electrifying - and narcissistic - Falstaff's of all time.

Great story of love and friendship, family, divorce and the pain one must go through in their personal pursuit of excellence and obstacles along the way towards achievement.
It is beautifully narrated by the author and is not to be missed as an audio book. Although it is about theater and art, it is easily relatable by any professional.

Historia
Likened to the works of Faulkner and Dickens when it was first published 20 years ago, this extraordinarily accomplished debut novel is a brilliantly plotted story of forbidden love and piercing political drama, centered on the tragic decline of an Indian family in the state of Kerala, on the southernmost tip of India. Armed only with the invincible innocence of children, the twins Rahel and Esthappen fashion a childhood for themselves in the shade of the wreck that is their family.

One of the best written novels I've ever read.
Revisado: 09-28-19
“The God of Small Things” is one of the most well written novels I’ve ever read. With luscious language and surreal style, Roy’s gradually weaves a patchwork of magnificent imagery with astute perception of the human condition.
Roy's debut novel is set in 1969 in Kerala, India, in the town of Ayemenem, at the time when Communist ideology is influencing the caste system, shaking the foundation of complex cultural and religious beliefs.
Narrated in the third person through adult eyes and through the eyes of a child, the story begins at the funeral of young Sophie Mol, the cousin of the novel's protagonist, Rahel and her fraternal twin brother, Estha. As this suspenseful narrative unfolds, Roy reveals the family history, social habits, politics and local customs that lead up to the culminating tragedy which irreparably breaks up
a prominent Indian family.
With keen awareness of their emotional depth and social immaturity, Roy allows us a glimpse into a children's psyche, filled with heartbreaking misunderstanding of the complexities of adults' lives. "At times like these, only the Small Things are ever said. The Big Things lurk unsaid inside."
Infused with bittersweet wisdom, the children's views reveal the numerous flaws of adult characters in a non-sequential narrative style that mirrors the process of resurrection of memory, especially one that is painful and has been buried deep in the child’s mind.
This remarkably beautiful novel deals with the hard topics of brutal attempts to uphold the cast system, destruction of real love, loss, death, and sadness in the most masterful manner, never departing from the intricacies of cultural Indial origins in which the story originates.

One the most unusual and wonderful book I've read this year
Revisado: 09-27-19
"Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine” is one of the most unusual books I've ever read. Somewhat evocative of Jane Austen’s writing tactics, the author utilizes humor to present a hard topic of profound loneliness in the most tender and humorous way.
The story of Eleanor unfolds gradually as a mystery surrounding an all too ordinary female heroine, whose quirky behavior and deadpan unawareness of her own oddity create an irresistible message on the importance of friendship, empathy and kindness. This wonderful female driven novel is one of love and acceptance.
Really enjoyed narattion by the talented Cathleen McCarron - she captured the characters with brilliant precision - she always does a fantastic job of reading without being felt read to. 👏🏻
