Historia
At first, only a few things are known about the celestial object that astronomers dub Rama. It is huge, weighing more than ten trillion tons. And it is hurtling through the solar system at inconceivable speed. Then a space probe confirms the unthinkable: Rama is no natural object. It is, incredibly, an interstellar spacecraft. Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence.

The Best SF Novel Ever Written
Revisado: 10-05-24
No guns. No shootouts. No space ninjas. Just the pure joy of discovery after discovery after discovery. The only problem was the read felt a little slow. Did nothing to diminish the awe of the story.

Historia
This collection shows a vibrant young writer with a wide-ranging imagination, ferocious creative energy, devastating wit, and an eye for the wonderful and terrifying and tragic. Among the gems are "All the Sounds of Fear", "The Sky Is Burning", "The Very Last Day of a Good Woman", and "In Lonely Lands". Though they stand tall on their own merits, they also point the way to the sublime stories that followed soon after and continue to come even now, more than 50 years later.

Your Audio Guide to Ellison Wonderland

Great Stories, too much introduction.
Revisado: 02-18-24
I know, I know. It’s an Ellison book. They must have lengthy introductions. But please, I beseech you, make them easier to skip! In a book I skip them, read the stories, then, maybe, the introduction. But there was a point when I realized I had driven to work, then back, then to work the next day, then back AND. Drove to work on the third day when my head suddenly exploded. Are there any actual stories in this book!

As a lifelong Niven fan I was hoping for something new. It was just a political novel. Barely science fiction.

Good story, but flawed execution
Revisado: 12-10-23
Really good story about breaking a monopoly. Fantastic world building. But the overall novel was damaged by flat characters, confusing dialogue and a very shallow story arc. Still, worth a read.

Historia
Avalon was thriving. The cold sleep colonists from Earth had settled on a verdant, livable world. The fast and cunning predators humans named “grendels” were under control, and the mainland outposts well established. Avalon’s new mainland hydroelectric power station was nearly complete, and when on-line would compensate for the nuclear power systems lost in the Grendel Wars. Humans would have power, and with power came the ability to make all the necessities for life. They would survive. They would not survive as a spacefaring people.

Much better than the previous two
Revisado: 12-03-23
Much less “manhood/warrior” stuff. Characters were more human and believable. The story went around and around a bit, but got there in the end. I enjoyed it.

Historia
A new generation is growing up on the island paradise of Camelot, ignorant of the Great Grendel Wars fought when their parents and grandparents first arrived on Earth. Setting out to explore the mainland, this group of young rebels feels ready to fight any grendels that get in their way. On Avalon, however, there are monsters that dwarf the ones their parents fought, and as the group will soon learn, monsters also dwell in the human heart. Avalon does not give up her secrets easily, and some of those mysteries are wicked as sin and blacker than the grave.

Much like the first, but without the cool science
Revisado: 11-27-23
Disappointed. More sexual politics, more manly men, more wonton women. No new “twist.” I really wish Niven had written this alone. It would be half as long and twice as interesting.

Great concept, mediocre execution
Revisado: 11-23-23
The core idea was brilliant. A novel about disrupting an ecology. But between the cool stuff it was padded out with too much “manhood ethic.” It felt in parts like a too wordy Hemingway novel.

Historia
One morning, a man wakes up to find himself transformed. Overnight, Anders’s skin has turned dark, and the reflection in the mirror seems a stranger to him. At first he shares his secret only with Oona, an old friend turned new lover. Soon, reports of similar events begin to surface. Across the land, people are awakening in new incarnations, uncertain how their neighbors, friends, and family will greet them. As the bond between Anders and Oona deepens, change takes on a different shading: a chance at a kind of rebirth—an opportunity to see ourselves, face to face, anew.

Worth Reading, but feels “thin”
Revisado: 07-03-23
Good book with interesting characters and some lovely imagery. But I felt the premise promised more than it ultimately delivered. It could have really addressed some big issues. However it felt more like it “poked lightly” at the issues rather than explore them.

Been listening to various of these lectures for twenty years and have always enjoyed them. Shutt has always been my favorite. This marries two of my great loves, astronomy and mythology.
