Verbose and interminable
Revisado: 02-14-25
I rarely abandon a book. I give it at least 30% of a read/listen before giving up. This book is verbose and basically horrible! Too many metaphors and similes. The story is weak and the characters weaker. My advice for these many hours required to listen to this is, Don’t. I gave up!

Not Moriarty’s best
Revisado: 12-01-24
What begins as a chilling, interesting plot deteriorates quickly as chapters move too fast between characters that have had too little development. Which character seems to invoke pity? I’m not sure. Which character am I rooting for? Why should I care about the premise if they have all been given their death notice? No truly unexpected plot twists here after the first weak one early in the book.

Historia
When Mayer (nee Marty) Belkin fled small-town Georgia for Brooklyn nearly thirty years ago, he thought he'd left his wasted youth behind. Now he's a Talmud scholar married into one of the greatest rabbinical families in the world. But his mother's untimely death brings a shocking revelation: Mayer and his ne'er-do-well twin brother David aren't, in fact, Jewish. Traumatized and spiritually bereft, Mayer's only recourse is to convert to Judaism. But the earliest date he can get is a week from now. What are two estranged brothers to do in the interim?

An Epic unexpected journey
Revisado: 10-30-24
I really loved this book! It was pure entertainment for me. Some plot points seemed like a stretch but they made for a fun ride and an unexpected ending. I’m not sure which character most embodies me: Mayer (Marty), David, or Mom. Maybe all three.

Historia
Twenty-one-year-old Tanner Quimby needs a place to live. Preferably one where she can continue sitting around in sweatpants and playing video games nineteen hours a day. Since she has no credit or money to speak of, her options are limited, so when an opportunity to work as a live-in caregiver for an elderly woman falls into her lap, she takes it. The two start off their living arrangement happily ignoring each other until Tanner starts to notice things—weird things.

Good story about getting out of your comfort zone
Revisado: 11-13-23
It took a little bit to get into this book but I’m glad I stuck with it. Both main characters were in a rut and they needed to live again. There were plenty of surprises as the story unfolded.
My biggest disappointment was the performance. The main characters are from Atlanta and there were absolutely no Southern accents. Sal from Brooklyn had a Brooklyn accent. One might view this as a denigration of the South. Make this right.

Historia
Your dad’s not a good person. Your dad killed people, son. These are some of the last words Jack Givins’ father spoke to him before he was whisked away by witness protection, leaving Jack and his mother to pick up the shattered pieces of their lives as best they could. Years later, Jack is a grown man with problems of his own. He’s a talented but struggling author, barely scraping by on the royalties from his moderately successful first book. So when the U.S. Marshals approach him with a lucrative opportunity, he’s in no position to turn them down.

Good story
Revisado: 11-06-23
This is the first novel I’ve read by this author. I liked it a lot. I wasn’t able to pinpoint the character’s’ connections right away, and I liked that. I was pleased with the ending. Overall a good book.

Disappointing
Revisado: 09-07-23
I was looking forward to this book based on reviews.
I was disappointed. The characters were shallow and not well-developed. The story line never properly tied up the loose ends such as Henri’s family business. Louise spent too much time feeling sorry for herself.
This is my last Christine Mangan novel.

Once a hotshot investigative reporter, Jack Tagger now bangs out obituaries for a South Florida daily, "plotting to resurrect my newspaper career by yoking my byline to some famous stiff". Historia
Clayton Burroughs comes from a long line of outlaws. For generations the Burroughs clan has made their home on Bull Mountain in North Georgia, running shine, pot, and meth over six state lines, virtually untouched by the rule of law. To distance himself from his family's criminal empire, Clayton takes the job of sheriff in a neighboring community to keep what peace he can.

Ups and downs of Bull Mountain
Revisado: 07-10-22
The story line of Bull Mountain is good. Troxell captured the clannish and protective nature of mountain people fairly well. There were a few times when he produced some eye-rolling cliches that were not necessary when describing the mountain people. The generations of Burroughs’ moved smoothly and was understandable.
I did not like the narrator’s efforts at the many characters’ voices. He was terrible! Children, females, and other passive characters sounded the same. If I’d known the narrator was going to ruin my overall enjoyment of the book, I would have read it on a Kindle.

Disappointed with Appalachian Daughter
Revisado: 05-24-22
Being from East Tennessee, I had high hopes for this book.
The writing was choppy, often jumping from one week to another with no details filling the gaps. The characters were hollow. The actions of the mother of the main character were never explained and the end of the book left readers with no resolution of the mother-daughter rift.
I do not recommend spending the time and effort necessary to listen to this book.

Historia
Named for a flower whose blood-red sap possesses the power both to heal and poison, Bloodroot is a stunning fiction debut about the legacies - of magic and madness, faith and secrets, passion and loss - that haunt one family across the generations, from the Great Depression to today. The novel is told in a kaleidoscope of seamlessly woven voices and centers around an incendiary romance that consumes everyone in its path.

Bloodroot is spot-on with East Tennessee tone
Revisado: 04-12-22
I loved this book! Having grown up, lived and raised a family in rural East Tennessee I know these characters, these mountains and the love of home and family. I could see the sights and smell the smells and even taste the meals Birdie put on the table. The poverty and violence of many of the characters was sadly familiar too. This book is an excellent read for anyone with mountain roots and everyone who longs to feel and understand the lore, the love and the history of Appalachia.
