I got caught be the story, the characters, the conflict...and then it got melodramatic and everything that happened in the last half was too convenient to be fun to listen to. The narrators were alright, but only Eliza's narrator truly felt vibrant and alive.

How? How is it possible to make zombies so boring?

There are some authors who can dig into a character's life in such a way that when the horror begins, you are 100% invested in the outcome.
And then there's this book, where we spend 10 minutes listening to a character repeat the names of eveyone they know (both first and last) every sentence or so. We spend 8-10 chapters watching a character get attacked by zombies and it's drawn out so absurdly long, you're hoping to god that the person dies and puts you out of your misery. And then the POV shifts and guess what? Yet another examination of the minutiae of another boring person's life.
Bah. Disappointed.

If you introduce a bunch of characters...

You can't just pretend those characters don't exist at the end of the book. Great, stallar, amazing performance by Julia Whelon. I just with the story stayed true to the characters I was made to like.

Super awesome zombie fun!

I loved this story so much that I have to get the rest of the books that she's written. They are funny, touching, scary, fantastic zombie fun and I love them so hard. I DO wish they had done the second book in the City Series the way they did this one: with the male narrator taking the dude parts and the female narrator taking the chick parts. This one was performed magnificently. Way to go!

A good story with an all right narrator

I really enjoyed this continuation of the story started in Controlled Descent. My favorite part was the growing relationship between two characters particularly, one old, one new.
The story is well-written, flows beautifully, and comes to a satisfying conclusion. My one distraction was the overuse of personification. At times the cast seemed even bigger than it was because so many of the characters' emotions were personified.
The narrator has some noticeable vocal patterns he falls into and this was most obvious in the first part of the book. Near midway, he slows down and really improves, to the point that I could forget I was listening to someone reading and just enjoy the story.
Overall, this was a great story and audiobook. I'd recommend it for folks who enjoy thrillers and science fantasy!
