I can’t finish it
Revisado: 02-08-25
This is rare that I can’t finish a book. This is just too gruesome. The medical examiner reports, describing vaginas in boxes and heads without eyes made me physically sick.
Also the narrator is so monotonous it is quite hard to keep you interest in the story

Not a lot of story at all
Revisado: 10-30-23
There isn’t a lot of story in this book really. I bought it because the reviews were good but overall there isn’t any resolution to the story, just a whole lot of endless sex scenes

Half the time I had no idea what was going on
Revisado: 04-01-23
That was truly a bad production. Maybe the story is good I wouldn’t know because half the time I had no idea who was talking and the background sounds were so distracting.
It was truly bad.

When Angela met Jason Powell while catering a dinner party in East Hampton, she assumed their romance would be a short-lived fling, like so many relationships between locals and summer visitors. To her surprise, Jason, a brilliant economics professor at NYU, had other plans, and they married the following summer. For Angela, the marriage turned out to be a chance to reboot her life. She and her son were finally able to move out of her mother's home to Manhattan, where no one knew about her tragic past.

Worst narrator ever
Revisado: 10-03-22
I think I gave it a fair try, 4hrs. But I just can’t finish this book, the narration is horrid. I don’t know if Xe Sands is bored (it is after all a pretty slow story) or tired, but her voice just irks me.
It is so bad. I tried at different speeds, she mumbles and all the voices are the same and she just sounds… over it. Kind of like me and this book I guess

Unsatisfying story and horrible narration
Revisado: 09-15-22
I am not sure I really like the moral of the story of this book. So I guess all is well that ends well if absolutely everyone lives miserable ever after.
I don’t know, I don’t necessarily needs it to be wrapped up in a neat little bow, but it was just not great.
The whispering narration is horrid. It’s creepy. I understand the point and why they did it but honestly it made my skin crawl, I hated every second of it

Uncomfortable daughter-father relationship
Revisado: 07-22-22
I had to stop listening at times because I just couldn’t bear a supposed grown up woman saying hundreds of time « mommy » and « daddy » within a chapter. It was just ridiculous.
And don’t get me started with how she talks about her father who was so good looking and incredible
Just weird. Strong daddy issue weirdness.

Late one night in the quiet Hudson Valley town of Havenkill, a distraught woman stumbles into the police station - and lives are changed forever. Historia
Ever have one of those days where life just plain sucks? Welcome to my last three months - ever since I caught my can’t-be-soon-enough-ex-husband cheating with his paralegal. I’m 35 years old, and I’ve lost my NYC apartment, my job, my money, and frankly, my dignity. But the final heartache in the suck sandwich of my life? My great-aunt Maggie died. The only family member who’s ever gotten me. Even after death, though, she’s helping me get back up again. Too bad that bravado only lasts as long as it takes to drive into Huckleberry Hills. And see the house.

Worst main character ever
Revisado: 03-14-22
The first few hours of this book are actually pretty interesting, with the house needing renovations and the divorce etc.
But oh my god the “second part”. First of it is about 3 hours too long. Second of the book really never ends at all, we never get to know what really happens to any of the main plots started: the renovation, the divorce, the new sister… who cares right? This second part is mostly whining and back and forth on this atrociously annoying main character that can’t make up her mind. I have no idea if the author thinks that this is what a strong woman would act like but she is just unbearable.

Depressing and constant complaining
Revisado: 01-28-22
I read the reviews and people said it was going to be a funny book so i am a bit surprised. This book really brought me down.
Firstly the narrator (the author) is just a bummer. She really sucked the life out of me.
Secondly this book was just her complaining about her husband. Constantly. Wow does she not like her husband.
Finally it is really a really depressing story that drags on for too long but nothing really terrible happens to them. Like nobody dies or looses their house or the kids don’t get taken away. So she just complains and complains. And reading this in the time of this pandemic just made me feel that this lady loves to swim in self pity.
Just annoying
